F.Chowds
With the 9th and 13th picks in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Jets select...we'll find out tonight. Here's a final look at who mock drafters around the country think New York will take in the first round: Conor Orr, The Star-Ledger 9: Barkevious Mingo, DE, LSU 13: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia "Here's a chaos scenario: The Jets take Ryan Nassib or Geno Smith if they drop here. Don't rule it out. For now, though, it's the best player on the board, a nice building block." Mike Mayock, NFL.com 9: Dion Jordan, DE, Oregon 13: Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame "Now we're going to prop up Mark Sanchez a little bit. In today's NFL, this kid matches up with everything that you want in a vertical tight end: At 6-foot-6, 250 pounds, he's a nightmare for a linebacker or a safety." Daniel Jeremiah, NFL.com 9: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia 13: D.J. Hayden, CB, Houston Bucky Brooks, NFL.com 9: Barkevious Mingo, DE, LSU 13: Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame "After trading Darrelle Revis, the Jets must upgrade their pass rush if they want the defense to remain among the league's elite. Mingo is raw, but offers tremendous athleticism and speed off the edge." Gil Brandt, NFL.com 9: (projects a trade with the Oakland Raiders) 13: Barkevious Mingo, DE, LSU "By the time the first round is over, the Jets get their replacement for Revis in Milliner and the pass rusher they would have taken at No. 9 all along in Mingo." Mel Kiper Jr., ESPN 9: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU 13: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia "This is a player that can work all over the field, is almost impossible to keep covered and will even take handoffs. Think of Randall Cobb coming into the league, but with more polish as a receiver. They need this kind of player." Todd McShay, ESPN 9: Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame 13: Chance Warmack, G Alabama Rob Rang, CBSSports.com 9: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU 13: Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia "Incumbent starting quarterback Mark Sanchez has shown flashes but regressed badly last season, and the team reportedly explored including him as part of the package to the Bucs. At this pick, Smith is a palatable gamble." Dane Brugler, CBSSports.com 9: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia 13: Jarvis Jones, OLB, Georgia "After going offense with the ninth overall pick, they move to defense and look to help the pass rush, adding the SEC's leading sacking artist the past two years." Pat Kirwan, CBSSports.com 9: Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama 13: Jarvis Jones, OLB, Georgia "A head coach told me today that Milliner is fine, health-wise, in his eyes." Pete Prisco, CBSSports.com 9: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU 13: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia "He would add some explosive speed to a team that needs it." Peter Schrager, FOXSports.com 9: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia 13: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU "With Geno Smith still on the board at 13, the Jets shock the Radio City Music Hall crowd by passing on the quarterback and going with Barkevious Mingo, the talented pass rusher out of LSU." Don Banks, SI.com 9: Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama 13: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU "New York [could come] out of the first round with both its new starting corner in Milliner and the play-making Mingo. I don't think even a Jets fan could figure out a way to boo that draft-night maneuver." Nate Davis, USA Today 9: Dee Milliner, CB, Alabama 13: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU "Tight end and offensive line (and, eventually, running back) could be options if they are serious about giving QB Mark Sanchez a fighting chance at reviving his career." Steve Serby, New York Post 9: Jonathan Cooper, G, North Carolina 13: Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia "Oh, go ahead, John. What do you have to lose? Is he a franchise quarterback? Who knows? If you like him, take him with this Revis pick." Ebenezer Samuel, New York Daily News 9: Barkevious Mingo, OLB, LSU 13: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia "GM John Idzik can't blow this pick; it's the one he got for parting with CB Darrelle Revis. The Jets have plenty of needs, but Austin would provide a field-stretching, ultra-versatile offensive weapon."
