Ryan has a career record of 11-5 in September, easily the New York Jets coach's most successful month on the regular-season calendar. He's never had a losing September in five years, and he can't say that about October, November and December. It's even more impressive when you consider he's started two of his five seasons with a rookie at quarterback. Ryan has said his training-camp philosophy -- not wearing down players with brutal practices -- is a big reason for his fast starts. Of course, the playing field was leveled in 2011 with the new collective bargaining agreement, which outlawed two-a-days and made it virtually impossible for coaches to run players into the ground. Still, the Jets have maintained a winning record in the first month. The days of September are dwindling, but Ryan can cap his best September since 2009 with a win Sunday at the Titans -- a clash of 2-1 teams. This will be a good test for the Jets because the Titans, another team not expected to do much, are a confident bunch after beating the Chargers, 20-17. Like the Jets, the Titans probably think they should be 3-0, their only loss an overtime affair against the Texans. A victory Sunday would be a tremendous boost for the Jets, a young team starting to find its identity. It would propel them into October, which happens to be Ryan's worst month. That's a story for another day. ICYMI: Tuesday was a relatively quiet day for the Jets. They cut linebacker Troy Davis from the practice squad, but didn't announce any additions. They worked out former Browns and Bills wide receiver David Nelson and several other players, according to a source. ... Second-year nose tackle Damon (Big Snacks) Harrison is one of the feel-good stories on the Jets. He's a former water boy, a junior-college castoff and a small-school sleeper, discovered by Jets scout Jeff Bauer. His rise from nowhere could make for a Disney movie. ...
