Rex Ryan on coaches' legal brief to lift lockout: 'Nobody knew it was filed and nobody approved it being filed.'

BY Manish Mehta

The Jets became the latest team to publicly distance itself from a legal brief filed to the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals by the NFL Coaches Association last week. The brief essentially supported the notion that the lockout should be lifted.

"I spoke with the coaches about it,” Rex Ryan said in a statement released by the team Thursday. “The thing I can say about it is none of our guys knew anything about it. It kind of came out of left field on us. Nobody knew it was filed and nobody approved it being filed, so that's where it is.”

Earlier today, Eagles coach Andy Reid and Chiefs coach Todd Haley released statements with a similar take as Ryan. Coaches form the Cowboys, Texans, Saints, Seahawks and Jaguars have already made public statements that they don’t support the legal brief. The Redskins also released a statement.

The NFL Coaches Association’s brief didn’t cite specific coaches.

"Owners and fans increasingly demand immediate success," the brief stated. "Coaches whose teams cannot fulfill such severe expectations face likely dismissal, which means the uprooting of families, economic dislocation, and a significantly less promising career path."
