kelly
IS MARCUS WILLIAMS A STAR IN THE MAKING ? Based on Bill Barnwell's research, he sure could be. On a per-snap basis, nobody has intercepted passes like Williams since the start of 2015, and his role is growing during a contract year.Small-sample-size studs > http://www.espn.com/nfl/team/_/name/nyj/new-york-jets
kelly
— The statistics are almost hard to believe. There's no way this can be true of a Jets defense. In four games, quarterbacks have compiled ratings of 114, 112.8, 105.2 and 133.5. The unit, as a whole, has forced just two turnovers. Opposing teams have scored at least 20 points in each game. Those statistics certainly don't make the Jets' D look very good. Just don't tell anyone on the roster that. They still believe, unwaveringly so, they're among the league's best. "Of course," cornerback Buster Skrine said Sunday. In a way, the Jets' 27-17 loss to the Seahawks was a spark notes version of the defense's struggles this entire season.Despite playing a hobbled Russell Wilson on just one leg, the quarterback shredded the secondary to the tune of 309 passing yards and three touchdowns. The Jets forced no turnovers. Their ferocious front managed just two sacks."Our job is to go out there and stop people," safety Calvin Pryor said. "We haven't been doing that. We have to go out there and do our job. We need to perform better as a defense. The effort is there. We just need to execute better."Maybe the most alarming aspect of the early-season problems have been the alarming amount of communication miscues in the secondary. Each game the Jets have played, the backend has made some mental mistake which has resulted in a big play. In Week 1, it turned into a 54-yard touchdown to the Bengals' A.J. Green. In Week 2, it was a 71-yard touchdown to the Bills' Greg Salas. In Week 3, it was a 12-yard touchdown to the Chiefs' Travis Kelce. This week, it was Wilson finding a wide open Tanner McEvoy for a 42-yard score."We have to fix it in the secondary," Skrine said. "We have to go in the classroom, do our job, fix our mistakes."And the Jets better fix it quick. Next week, they play the high-powered Steelers offense led by quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and receiver Antonio Brown. After that, it's Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Floyd, John Brown and the Cardinals. With the offense in a rut, the defense needs to be better. Otherwise, this 1-3 start could snowball to 1-5 awfully quick."I think we definitely have a good football team," Pryor said. "We just need to go out there and play better." > http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/10/buster_skrine_still_thinks_jets_defense_among_nfls.html#incart_river_index
kelly
-- New York Jets cornerback Buster Skrine said Friday he wasn’t offended by the comments Thursday of teammate Muhammad Wilkerson, who suggested the defensive line would have more quarterback sacks if the secondary had done a better job covering opposing receivers.“I mean, we could have had more sacks if our coverage was tighter,’’ Skrine said before the Jets boarded their charter flight to San Francisco to play the 49ers on Sunday. “You’ve got to go ask Mo why he said that, but it could be tighter on the back end.’’ On Thursday, when asked why the Jets managed only one sack of Andrew Luckin their 41-10 loss to the Indianapolis Colts Monday night, Wilkerson said, “Quarterbacks are getting the ball out quick, and they’re making plays. It’s not an excuse; we just have to... have tighter coverage and we have to get to the quarterback.’’ Then he added, “We can get to the quarterback, but... if they’re not holding them up for that one second, the ball is going to get out.’’ On Friday, Skrine admitted, “It hasn’t been the best year for the secondary,’’ but insisted he wasn’t angered by Wilkerson’s comments and declared that “Mo’s my guy.’’Skrine said he had no explanations for why the secondary -- which was thought to be a team strength entering the season -- has struggled and had recurring problems communicating on the field all season. He said, though, that he thought the secondary had picked up its play of late, up until Monday’s loss. “I feel like the last five, six games we played, the secondary has gotten better,’’ he said. “And then Monday Night Football, (it) laid an egg.’’ > http://www.espn.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/65497/buster-skrine-says-jets-secondary-can-bounce-back-from-rough-monday-night
