aside from evaluating draft prospects, one of the things NFL executives do at the scouting combine is meet with agents. Lots of agents. Mostly, they try to lay the groundwork for potential deals.

Toward that end, New York Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan is scheduled to huddle in Indianapolis with the agent for defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, who is entering the final year of his contract.

Wilkerson, arguably the top player on the Jets' roster, is due to earn $6.96 million in 2015 -- the amount of the fifth-year option exercised by the Jets last spring. Clearly, the Jets want to lock him up to a long-term deal. Former GM John Idzik tried to get it done, but the sides didn't come close to an agreement. If they can't reach a deal by next February, the Jets presumably would use the franchise tag on Wilkerson.

Now, with close to $50 million in cap room, the Jets have no excuses. Wilkerson's future is one of Maccagnan's top priorities.
