Smizzy
Chargers: Brees has offer in hand February 14, 2006 12:34 PM ET The News Chargers general manager A.J. Smith confirmed that they have submitted a long-term contract offer to quarterback Drew Brees and are awaiting his response, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. The window to strike agreement on a contract is short, as the NFL has a February 23 deadline for designating franchise and transition players. Smith has said they will make that decision approximately a week before that deadline to avoid allowing Brees to become an unrestricted free agent. Our View If the two sides do not reach agreement, the Bolts are likely to use the transition tag on their starting quarterback. That will compensate him approximately $9.7 million for the 2006 season, but will not be guaranteed until Brees makes the opening day roster. He is currently rehabbing from surgery to repair a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder. As a transition player, Brees would be free to negotiate a deal with other teams, but San Diego retains the right to match any offers. ..
