Free Agency vs. the draft

teams use some combination of these 2 to build - some rely more heavily on one than the other. the redskins have recently begun to rely almost solely on free agency and almost completely ignored the draft (sean taylor and late rd picks excluded).

i use the redskins as an example b/c they went from bottom feeder to contender in 2 seasons almost exclusively throught FA and trades (moss, brunnell, portis, springs, randle el, etc...).

with the rising signing bonus $$ being comitted to completely unproven players does it make more sense to build through free agency than the traditional route of the draft? what's interesting is that the jets seem to be on the completely opposite path with numerous draft choices that will likely increase with the abe trade. is this the right approach?
