Big Week for Jets as Joe Douglas Looks to add key Free Agents

Joe Douglas

The week ahead is a big one for Jets GM Joe Douglas who has two holes on his roster that need to be filled.  Douglas can use an established wide receiver opposite Garrett Wilson and and another edge defender before the NFL draft.  He’s hoping to fill those voids with a pair of free agent additions.

Firstly, the bigger  need of the two is that second pass catcher opposite Garrett Wilson who can be relied upon to beat NFL defenders.  With that in mind, the Jets are bringing in former Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams.

Former Chargers’ WR Mike Williams is scheduled to visit this week with the Jets, Panthers and Steelers, per source. Jets up first with Williams arriving Monday night.

Also, with the Chargers having traded WR Keenan Allen, they also are interested in bringing back Williams.

The 6′ 4” Williams played in only 3 games last season due to injury, but in the four years prior, he managed to haul in 279 catches for 4,462 yards and 30 touchdowns.  If the Jets could get a fraction of that type of production out of Williams in 2024, it would be a huge victory.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Jets let free agent edge rusher Bryce Huff walk in free agency which will allow them to elevate last year’s first-round pick Will McDonald.  But in a rotation-heavy system, the Jets will still be in the market for an edge rusher.

With Tyron Smith locked in… the Jets have Jadeveon Clowney visiting Mon/Tues. And as @iamSauceGardner mentioned earlier today, a (mystery) WR visiting next week.

Aside from Williams coming in this week, Joe Douglas and the Jets will also be meeting with veteran edge rushers Jadeveon Clowney.  A bigger and superior player against the run than Huff, Clowney also had 9.5 sacks last season.  That number would likely dip with the Jets as he would have fewer reps, but his presence would go a long way in keeping the D-line as one of the tops in the NFL.
