Camping Out

Eye-opener: Adhering tightly to the schedule has been one of the early hallmarks of Eric Mangini's tenure as Jets coach. But it was just too hot to practice yesterday afternoon. Mangini, in consultation with the team's medical and training staffs, pushed back practice from its scheduled 2 p.m. start to 5:45 p.m. while moving up the evening meetings to fill the time void. Not that the players got a huge break. Weather.com recorded a temperature of 100 degrees with a heat index of 112 at 3 p.m. At 6 p.m. it had "cooled'' to 95/106. "We thought that this would still be a way to get used to the elements, have an effective practice and get out of the bulk of the heavy heat here during midday,'' Mangini said. "This also gives us an opportunity to have the players hydrate that much more.''

Rookie watch: Rookie QB Kellen Clemens, a second-round pick out of Oregon, connected with rookie WR Brad Smith, a fourth-round pick out of Missouri, on a 40-yard fade for a touchdown past CB Derrick Strait down the right sideline. But Clemens then overthrew rookie WR Chris M. Baker badly on a short route to the left.

Training room: WR Dante Ridgeway left practice and had his right leg examined after S Kerry Rhodes brought him down in the one-on-one tackling drill. WR Laveranues Coles seemed to hurt his groin during 11-on-11s but returned the following series. DT Tui Alallefaleula (undisclosed), CB David Barrett (leg), S Erik Coleman (illness), TE Jason Pociask (shoulder) and DT Sione Pouha (knee) remain sidelined.

Training schedule: Nothing's definite yet, but Mangini hinted tomorrow might be an off-day for the Jets, which would be their first break after 11 practices in seven days. The Jets also announced this afternoon's practice would be closed to the public.

Competition: TE Joel Dreessen, also one of two long snappers on the roster, made five catches in 14 games last season but faces an uphill battle trying to pry time away from veterans Chris T. Baker and Doug Jolley. He didn't help himself by fumbling after catching a ball over the middle from Patrick Ramsey. Strait recovered and Dreessen got an earful from Mike Devlin, the assistant offensive-line and tight-ends coach.
