DENVER -- The Rockies completed their agreement on terms with right-handed reliever Luis Vizcaino on Friday, and are set for 2008 with plenty of strikeout potential at the back of the bullpen.

The $7.5 million contract is for two years, with a club option for a third year.

Vizcaino, 33, pitched for the Yankees last season and tied for the lead among all Major League pitchers in wins while going 8-2 with a 4.30 ERA in a career-high 77 appearances. The Rockies have Vizcaino and left-handed reliever Brian Fuentes to set up closer Manny Corpas.

Vizcaino comes to the Rockies with a healthy 7.99 strikeouts-per-nine-innings ratio. His strikeout rate dropped slightly last season (7.41) with the heavy workload, but in 2006 while pitching in the National League West with the Diamondbacks he fanned 9.92 per nine.

Fuentes, meanwhile, has a career rate of 9.97 strikeouts per nine. Vizcaino and Fuentes have the potential for quiet innings, whether in a setup role or at the end of games on days Corpas may not be available.

Vizcaino also is durable, with at least 70 appearances in five of the last six seasons. His 360 appearances over the last five seasons are fourth-most among pitchers in the Majors over that span, behind Ray King (377), Scott Eyre and Brad Lidge (372 apiece). He has 485 career appearances with the Athletics, Brewers, White Sox, Diamondbacks and Yankees. Thomas Harding is a reporter for MLB.com.
