Chargers tight end Antonio Gates plans to undergo foot surgery next week to fix the injury that nagged him at the end of the season.

"It may be the beginning of training camp and it may be the middle of the season," Antonio Gates said.

The Chargers Pro Bowl tight end faces a four-to-six month recovery time, which should allow him to be ready for the start of the regular season and possibly the start of training camp.

Dr. Robert Anderson, one of the nation's top foot specialists, will perform the surgery. The Charlotte, N.C., surgeon has operated on numerous foot injuries that have allowed many players to return the next season.

Though listed as doubtful in the Chargers playoff games last season, Gates played every game and made some effective plays despite the pain.
