Canucks' Former Top Draft Pick Is Killed in Motorcycle Accident

By Erik Matuszewski

Luc Bourdon, a former first-round draft pick of the Vancouver Canucks, died today in a motorcycle crash in Canada, the team said. He was 21.

The rookie defenseman was killed after his motorcycle struck a tractor-trailer truck in northern New Brunswick near his hometown of Shippagan, the Associated Press said without citing the source of its information.

Bourdon was the 10th pick in the 2005 draft and made his National Hockey League debut this season. He played in 27 games for the Canucks, scoring two goals.

"We are deeply saddened by today's news,'' Canucks General Manager Mike Gillis said in a statement. "Luc was an extremely talented player with a bright future. He brought great passion to the game and was a valued team member on and off the ice. He will be greatly missed.''

Bourdon was a member of the Canadian national team that won gold medals at the world junior hockey championships in 2006-07.
