OAKLAND - The Yankees haven't had much success with the Cuban third basemen they've signed, but the club isn't shying away from Dayan Viciedo.

"We will certainly take a look at it," minor-league head Mark Newman said of the 18-year-old Viciedo, who defected from Cuba in May and is believed to be staying in Miami while waiting to establish residency in another country so he won't be subject to MLB's draft.

"He is a young guy who can swing the bat."

Since Viciedo, who began playing in Cuba's major leagues when he was 15, is represented by Jaime Torres, Viciedo is expected to land in the Dominican Republic, but Yankee eyes in the DR haven't seen him yet.

The Yankees invested $4.5 million in Andy Morales in 2001, and he lasted 48 games in Double-A before being released because he hit .231 and there were questions about his age. The Yankst.gif gave Cuban third baseman Yobal Duenas $60,000 in 2004.

For the second game in four days, Hideki Matsui Hideki Matsui t.gif wasn't in the lineup for last night's 3-1 Yankee win, but he said there was nothing physically wrong with him. Manager Joe Girardi said, "It was just a day."

Kyle Farnsworth Kyle Farnsworth t.gif was available - but not used - after not having pitched since last Thursday due to a sore right biceps.

Girardi opted to start switch-hitting Wilson Betemit at first base instead of Shelley Duncan. Duncan, who is batting .175, hasn't started a game since May 30 and has one at-bat in the last 10 games.

Girardi said Phil Hughes might need longer than the six weeks pitchers require in spring training to come back. The righty is recovering from a fractured rib that is to undergo further testing this week.

"He hasn't played catch," Girardi said.

Girardi plans on catching Jorge Posada in four of the six games on this trip. Even if Posada's right shoulder holds up, the Yankees won't rush to drop a catcher and will continue to carry Jose Molina and Chad Moeller.
