Sanchez ready for camp

Bill Kostroun/APBelieve it or not Jets fans training camp is less than a week away. Gang Green is set to take the field on Monday August 2nd, for one of the most anticipated seasons in recent memory (yes more than the Favre season). Lets take a look at some of the top storylines as the Jets prepare for camp.

1) Development of Sanchez - The spotlight is going to be on second-year quarterback Mark Sanchez who is recovering from offseason knee surgery. Sanchez, who seemed to be fully recovered in mini-camp, will have his hands full taking his game to the next level, while trying to manage an all-star cast of playmakers. The Jets are loaded with talent and personalities on offense, and it will be interesting to see how Sanchez handles it with the added on pressure of an expected Super Bowl run. An argument will be made that the Jets will only go as far as Mark takes them.

2) Left guard competition- The New York Jets released Pro-Bowl left guard Alan Faneca this past offseason, breaking up one of the strengths of the team which was the offensive line. Some say the move was done for financial reasons, others for performance issues, but the bottom line is that there is now a hole at the position. Second round pick Vlad Ducasse and second year player Matt Slauson will battle it out for the starting position. While the Jets want to see Ducasse grab the starting spot, I would not be surprised to see Gang Green pick up a veteran that is released from another team during training camp.

3) Transition of new players - Gang Green was very active in the offseason bringing in several high profile players (Tomlinson,Taylor,Holmes,Cromartie) that will need to get accustomed to the New York/New Jersey market. It is one thing to play in the New York market, it is another to play for a team with high expectations that has not won a Super Bowl in over 40 years.

4) Special teams play- The New York Jets lost gunner Wallace Wright, returner Leon Washington, and kicker Jay Feely this past offseason, which definitely raised some eyebrows. At the start of camp Feely is being replaced by the inconsistent Nick Folk, which has increased antacid sales in Jets nation by 300%. The return game will be handled by several players including Antonio Cromartie, Joe McKnight, and Kyle Wilson which could give the Jets a very explosive unit. As for the coverage units, wide receiver David Clowney is expected to man a gunner position, but for some reason I can see that becoming a platoon situation which is not good.

5) Performance of the running backs - Gang Green decided to cut leading rusher and team leader Thomas Jones this offseason, which is a move many still question. The Jets are putting the ball in the hands of second year back Shonn Green, along with future Hall of Famer LaDainian Tomlinson. Greene is an explosive, physical back, but has had some issues with injuries and coughing up the football. Tomlinson has a lost a step or two, but will be a dangerous receiving threat, something that the Jets lacked last year. As for McKnight, he can be a versatile third down back with the potential to break off some big plays. The Jets offense is built around their running game and all three of these players will need to have solid seasons in order for the team to be successful.

6) Controlling the circus- The New York Jets have quickly become a team that everyone wants to talk about. Whether it is about the team's bravado, the HBO Hard Knocks show, or about the potential to win the Super Bowl, everyone has something to say about Gang Green. The Jets have embraced the spotlight, and at times even seem to be looking for it, but it is up to Rex Ryan to keep his players focused. Nothing in the NFL is won on paper, and lets not forget that the Jets got several breaks last year prior to their improbable AFC Championship game run. Ryan must know when to crack the whip and reel his team in when things start to spin out of control. This will be no easy task in a media market starving for stories and controversy.

hey Bill Kostroun did not write this LOL

So take your credit, Tyson!

This will be interesting. I like Clowney. I think he is a viable WR, but he's far enough down the depth chart that he has to produce in some other fashion. I'm hoping you can see it becoming a platoon because of some hidden bias rather than having seen them play. Wallace Wright was very good, but athletically Clowney should be fine. We'll have to see, but it's something to look at early in preseason. People think guys like Allison should have a leg up due to return ability, but there are plenty of guys with return ability-Brad Smith, Leonhard, Wilson, Holmes and Cromartie- that already have roster spots.
