Patriots Still Favored to Win Super Bowl

Friday, January 14, 2011

Only eight National Football League teams are left heading into this weekend’s divisional playoff round, and the New England Patriots remain the top pick among fans to win the Super Bowl.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of professional football fans shows that 37% believe the Patriots will win the championship this year. No other team comes close, but both the Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers pick up the vote from 12% of fans. Ten percent (10%) pick the Atlanta Falcons, while six percent (6%) think the Chicago Bears will come out on top.

Just five percent (5%) believe the Baltimore Ravens will win it all, while the Seattle Seahawks and New York Jets tie for last place with four percent (4%) support. Twelve percent (12%) of football fans are not sure who will win this year’s Super Bowl. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

The survey of 1,770 Professional Football Fans was conducted on January 10-12, 2011 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 2 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.

Last month, 34% of football fans said the Patriots' would be Super Bowl champions. Eleven percent (11%) thought the New Orleans Saints would successfully defend their title, but the Saints were eliminated by the 7-9 Seahawks in a shocking upset last Saturday.

When it comes to who fans want to win the Super Bowl, Tom Brady's team has company. Eighteen percent (18%) would like to see Green Bay win their first Super Bowl since 1996, while 17% are pulling for New England.

Thirteen percent (13%) are rooting for the Steelers, while the Falcons and Bears pick up support from 11%. Nine percent (9%) hope the Jets pull out their first Super Bowl victory since 1969, and seven percent (7%) are rooting for the underdog Seahawks. Just six percent (6%) want to see quarterback Joe Flacco and the Baltimore Ravens win the championship.

Perhaps not surprisingly, Patriots fans are the most confident. Seventy-two percent (72%) of those rooting for the Pats think they’ll win. Steelers fans are the second most confident group, with 62% who think their team will win its third championship in six years.

Fans of the Jets, who face the Patriots Sunday for the first time since an embarrassing 45-3 defeat in Week 13, are the least confident. In fact, 33% of Jets fans pick the Patriots to win the championship, while just 26% think their own team will make it all the way.

Dead last huh? Patriots favored by a wide margin huh?
