1.  Yes.

2.  Because he got a nice FA contract (2 years/$6 million) as a result of his strong performance with the Pats that they were not in a position to match.  

3.  Because he does not get a roster spot as a lifetime achievement award just because he played well for the Pats in 2014.  Point is the last time the Patriots made a "desperation" trade at the "last minute" for a "bust" it culminated in a SB championship and said bust was a significant contributor.
