New York Jets Report Card

Week 12: New England Patriots @ New York Jets

11/27/16

Quarterback: C-

Fitzpatrick: 22/32, 269 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT, 1 fumble, 2 rushes for 1 yard

For a while there, Ryan looked like the Ryan of 2015. From then on, he played just bad enough to lose. With all the overthrows and the underthrows having been acknowledge, Fitzpatrick did give the Jets a 4th quarter lead – a lead that the defense couldn’t hold on to. But when forced to play from behind, it was the same ol’ story: a turnover ended the Jets day.

Running Backs: D

Forte: 13/27/0, 3 receptions for 23 yards

Powell: 8/36/0, 1 reception for 7 yards

The running game never got going, but what hurt the most was when CJ Spiller beat a linebacker deep and let the ball fall right through his arms. Ouch.

Wide Receivers/Tight Ends: C-

Enunwa: 5/109/1

B. Marshall: 6/67/1

Anderson: 2/34/0, 1 fumble

Bostick: 2/14/0

Seferian-Jenkins: 1/9/0

J. Marshall: 2/6/0

There was a Brandon Marshall sighting, and Quincy Enunwa’s TD was impressive – reminiscent of 2010 Santonio Holmes playoff-level impressive. But Robby Anderson’s fumble may very well have been the turning point in the game. It was 10-0 Jets when it happened, and the Patriots never looked back.

Offensive Line: C-

Both of the tackles need to be replaced by next season and that’s assuming Nick Mangold is healthy. If he’s not, they’ll need a center, too.

Defensive Line: B+

Hey, we’ve got a good defensive line! But not so that you really noticed it or anything through the first 10 weeks of the season.

Linebackers: C

The Patriots had more success in the run game than one would expect and it was only a wounded Patriots TE corps that kept this unit from getting exposed.

Secondary: B+

286 yards and a TD is about as modest as a Tom Brady game gets lately. Daryl Roberts looked promising, if inconsistent.

Special Teams: D

I’ll spare them this week, but the Special Teams unit is quickly on its way to earning a perpetual F for the season. It’s difficult to think of a game in which they didn’t cost the Jets points. Here though, it was a modest FG block – rather than the usual turnover resulting in a touchdown. So congratulations… I guess?

Coaching: D

When the Patriots spot you 10 points, you figure out a way. Or, in this case, you don’t. With a 4th and ~4 in the 2nd half, Bowles could have played it conservative (as he usually does) and punted the football. Or he could have been aggressive and gone for the 1st, given the fact that, you know, his team was 3-7. Instead he attempted a 54 yard field goal and, predictably, it was blocked. It’s as if this coach does his best to contradict my gut every time. The Jets haven’t had timeout/clock management issues this severe since before Herm Edwards hired Dick Curl.

Wondered if I just watched the same game you did.

We did not lose today because of the QB, and you think we have a good DL? LOL. Sorry, with all due respect, what I saw today was the same crap I have seen forever seemingly, a defense that puts forth effort in the first quarter, tires quickly, then disappears thereafter. Where was the great Jet pass rush? We were out sacked 1-0, and whenever NE needed pressure to kill a drive, they were able to generate it, we were not - we allowed them to go 82 yards in 3 or 4 plays in 1 minute or so - is that a great defense? Where was #96 all game long, besides jumping offside on 3rd and 1? Without Gronkowski, they still had guys running wild all game long over the middle, and that stupid 4th down and 4 at the end of the game that would have won it for us, watching Darren Lee cover the RB - ridiculous, that was a terrible coverage route - on 4th down, how do you not play press man coverage at the LOS? They are beating you underneath in the middle all game long and still, a 5-8 yard cushion was given each receiver on each play. Doesn't our CS watch film on Edelman, Ammendola, Bennett, White, and know what they do? Don't they know that if we hit Brady, they will adjust to this quick drop quick pass over the middle on virtually every pass play? Also, there was a play in the first half where Brady was out blocking (on an end around I think) and one of our guys (#48 I think it was) had the chance to obliterate him and did not, he backed off or stopped running. I sat thinking to myself, why did he not lay into Brady? He was fair game offering himself as a blocker, if you have the chance to hit him, hit him god damn it. If that was our QB, he would have gotten his head knocked off. This team is soft like it's coach.

Bottom line, yes they played hard, and also played just well enough to lose as they have so often this season. I have zero faith in this CS to be able to turn this horrific mess around, and develop young players for the future which is all this unfortunate season is about now. They have games within reach to win and fall short every time.

Thought the same thing when Brady did that. What do think a defense like the Broncos, Chiefs, Seahawks would have done seeing Brady leading a f*cking sweep? They would have rocked him into oblivion. And where was the coaching on that 4th & 4 like you said? F*ck man that's why we drafted Lee! He should never have been that far inside. 2 steps to his left & he would have stopped him short but he had WAY TOO FAR to run. Tells be Bowles or that idiot DC doesn't coach tendencies.

Are these grades based off a system you have or purely emotions? Fitz probably deserves more than a c minus he didn't do bad. Our receivers were over 200 yards with a pair of tds what do they need to do for an a? 700 yards 10td games?
