Bombers sign RB Onterrio Smith

WINNIPEG (CP) - Running back Onterrio Smith, suspended last year for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, signed a contract with the CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday.

Smith was released last month by the Minnesota Vikings with six weeks still remaining on the one-year suspension he received from the NFL for violating its drug policy.

In May 2005, Smith was caught at the Minneapolis airport with a device designed to beat drug tests - called The Original Whizzinator - when his bag was scanned by security. Smith claimed the kit was for his cousin and he wasn't charged by police.

But less than a month later, Smith was suspended for the entire 2005 season by the NFL for a third violation of the NFL's substance abuse policy.

Smith was also dismissed from the University of Tennessee in 2000 for marijuana use.

The Smith signing comes while the Toronto Argonauts are pursuing Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams, who is also serving a one-year drug suspension
