This is the second in our 8 part series of discussing what the Jets need to do at each specific position, beginning with their least area of need and ending with their area of most need. Second up is the running backs, which is ranked as their 7th highest area of need.

Who Should Stay:

1. Thomas Jones - He gutted out a tough 1100 yards behind a poor offensive line and has all the tools needed to be a feature back.

2. Leon Washington - Painfully under-utilized last season, arguably the Jets most explosive player.

Callahan In; Schottenheimer to Stay...For Now

The Jets announced the hiring of Bill Callahan today as assistant head coach/offense. He will be in charge of getting the team's offensive line in shape and improving the Jets' rushing attack. Callahan has a load of both college and NFL experience. He is considered an excellent offensive mind and his resume backs that up.

In 2000, Callahan lead the Raiders offense to the top rushing attack in the league, averaging 154.4 yards a game. He also helped the offensive line set franchise record lows in sacks allowed in both 2000 and 2001. He led the Raiders to the Super Bowl in 2002 where the team had the best passing attack in the league.

At Nebraska, his latest coaching job, the Cornhuskers were ranked in the top 25 in four offensive categories -- rushing, passing, total yardage and scoring.

"Bill brings valuable experience as an assistant coach and head coach on both the college and NFL levels," Jets coach Eric Mangini said. "His expertise with the running game and with protections will be a big asset. I look forward to adding him to our staff."

This is a good hire by Mangini. It is also nice to know he recognizes where the team failed in the 2007 season. I believe Mangini also knows that Brian Schottenheimer will be gone in the next year as a head coach somewhere and Callahan can step right into the offensive coordinator position.

Schottenheimer was scheduled to have a second interview in Baltimore before the Ravens announced the hiring of John Harbaugh as their head coach today. Mangini knows it's just a matter of time though before Schotty lands a head position.
