.... So maybe instead of a band-aid, Leiter becomes the reincarnation of Sal Maglie. Like Leiter, Maglie had been a star pitcher on another New York team, the '50s Giants, when he was abruptly sold across leagues to the Cleveland Indians in 1955. The general consensus was that he was through when, early in the 1956 season, at 39, he was released by the Indians and signed by the Dodgers. History will show Sal Maglie went 13-5 for the Dodgers and played a principal role in their winning the '56 pennant.

Listening to Leiter summing up his whirlwind first day as a returning Yankee, you got the feeling he fully expects a similar scenario.

"I love these kinds of moments," he said. "I need them for my concentration."

He figures to get plenty more of them. For this one, the Red Sox could only watch and admire.

"I don't care if his ERA was 50 in florida," said Red Sox first baseman Kevin Millar, who was struck out twice by Leiter. "Tonight he looked like the ERA leader. If that's the guy they released, I don't want to see the guys they kept."
