Darren O'Day, designated for assignment by the Mets last Saturday, is headed to the Texas Rangers, Newsday has learned.

The Rangers have been awarded the waiver claim on O'Day, 26, whom the Mets claimed from the Angels in last December's Rule 5 draft. A right-handed side-armer, O'Day posted a 0.00 ERA in four games for the Mets, allowing five hits and a walk and striking out two over three innings.

Where O'Day frustrated Mets officials, however -- albeit in a tiny sample size -- was dealing with inherited runners. He inherited three runners, and they all scored, according the Elias Sports Bureau. The Mets took O'Day off their roster to make room for Nelson Figueroa, who was filling in Sunday for the injured Mike Pelfrey.

As a Rule 5 selection, O'Day must remain on the Rangers' major-league roster. If the Rangers waived him as the Mets did, and O'Day cleared waivers, then Texas would have to offer O'Day back to the Angels.

Texas had claimed Darren O'Day on waivers from the Mets early in the afternoon. O'Day was in Panama City, Fla. According to the announcers, he was told simply to fly to Canada, clear customs and immigrations and go the hotel. But when the game went to extra innings, he was told to re-route to the ballpark. He arrived in the 10th inning. There was no uniform for him so the righthanded O'Day was given the uniform of lefty Kason Gabbard, who is currently at Triple-A.

With two on and righty hitter Kevin Millar due up in the 11th, Texas manager Ron Washington summoned O'Day. The Ranger infielders waiting on the mound were literally laughing at the scene coming toward them: a pitcher they did not know, in a uniform of another pitcher, coming to try to bail them out. They shook hands with O'Day on the mound as a quick introduction, and then catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia tried to quickly go through signals and repertoire with a pitcher he had never met, much less caught.

The story probably would have been better if somehow O'Day wiggled free and won the game. But Millar singled in the winning run.

Apparently that aspect of his game didn't change during his flight. :P
