New York Jets Still Super Bowl Contenders Without Darrelle Revis

By Dan Welin on August 13, 2010 0

The New York Jets have had a very interesting offseason, making many moves to improve a team that lost the AFC Championship Game last season.

They have assembled a roster that has more star power than any other team in the AFC.

The biggest move they haven’t made yet is gaining a lot of publicity. Star cornerback Darelle Revis is still holding out trying to get a more lucrative contract.

While many wide receivers around the league, especially in the AFC East, are probably smiling at this, contending AFC teams should not be.

If the Jets do play without Darelle Revis this season, they will still be one of the top teams in the AFC. The roster that they have on paper has to be the best in the AFC, if not the NFL.

Although talk of winning the Super Bowl has circulated Jets camp for weeks, they have a legitimate reason to believe they will contend and maybe win this year’s Super Bowl.

Let’s start in the AFC East.

The Jets are the team to beat, there is no question.

Credit still has to be given to the team that has dominated that division for years, the New England Patriots, but this year the Jets have the roster to capture the division.

Along with the Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, and Indianapolis Colts, the Jets are one of the teams to beat in the AFC.

Losing Revis in the secondary is obviously a big blow, but the Jets still have a deep secondary that features Antonio Cromartie and first-round pick Kyle Wilson.

While the secondary hinges on Cromartie regaining his All-Pro ability, and Wilson adapting to the NFL quickly, the Jets will have a deep secondary that will shut down teams’ passing games.

Rex Ryan knows his way around the defensive side of the field. The Jets defense should be tops in the league again this season.

On the other side of the ball, the Jets have an offense that seems that it can score at will.

Sophomore quarterback Matt Sanchez leads the charge, fulfilling his potential with a full season throwing to Braylon Edwards and former Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes.

He also still has one of the league’s best young tight ends in Dustin Keller.

The Jets have a very good offensive line led by Nick Mangold and D’Brickashaw Ferguson.

They will pave the way for Shonn Green, who had a good rookie season, and the newly-acquired LaDainian Tomlinson.

The Jets rushing offense should be one of the best in the league.

In just his second season as the Jets coach, Rex Ryan, has already brought them to the AFC Championship game.

With the moves they made in the offseason and his defensive schemes, he should do that and more this season with the Jets.

With Darrelle Revis, critics think Super Bowl for the Jets.

Without Darelle Revis, I think the Jets have a really good team that still has the ability to contend for a Super Bowl. If they do get Darelle Revis back though, watch out AFC.
