PM Practice report: Short and sweet

August, 14, 2010 Aug 146:01PM ETEmail Print Comments By Rich CiminiOn a gorgeous day in Central New York, the New York Jets practiced before their largest crowd (estimated 2,000) of training camp, not counting last weekend's Green and White scrimmage. It was an abbreviated workout (1 hour, 20 minutes) in "shells," no pads. Rex Ryan went soft on the team Saturday, taking a page from the Herm Edwards training-camp regimen. Remember the days of Club Ed?

Once again, there was a concentration of red-zone work. The best moment (for the offense) came in a 7-on-7 drill, when QB Mark Sanchez threw a touchdown to WR Braylon Edwards on a high fade. Edwards went up and over CB Marquice Cole for the catch, and flipped the ball into the crowd.

Sanchez also had some shaky moments in the red zone, as he was almost picked off by LB Bart Scott. Later, in 11-on-11, he rolled right and forced a pass into the end zone, almost intercepted by S Brodney Pool.

Overall, Sanchez was 2-for-5 in 11-on-11. Other observations:

1. WR Marcus Henry finished a strong day with a nice leaping sideline grab. At 6-4, 216 pounds, Henry is the biggest receiver on the team, but the former sixth-round pick has been stuck on the practice squad the last two years. Monday night's game will be critical for players like Henry, on the outside looking in.

2. Another player in the Henry category is WR Aundrae Allison, who has made a handful of nice catches in camp. Frankly, Allison, a former Minnesota Viking, looks better than David Clowney at receiver. Both have terrific speed, but Allison is a more natural pass catcher.

3. LG Matt Slauson has received some lofty praise from Ryan, but the second-year lineman was wasted by DT Kris Jenkins in a one-on-one pass-rushing drill. Jenkins used an inside swim move, leaving Slauson frozen in his tracks. In a real game, that's a quarterback flat on his back.

4. Cole was the right cornerback in the nickel package, with Antonio Cromartie at left corner and rookie Kyle Wilson in the slot. What happened to Dwight Lowery? Has he gone from No. 2 to No. 4 in two weeks?

5. Rookie RG Charlie Tanner, an undrafted free agent from Texas, held up nicely in the pass-rushing drill. He plays with excellent leverage and technique. Tanner and fellow rookie G Vladimir Ducasse were the last two players on the field, working on a blocking sled with line coach Bill Callahan.

6. RB LaDainian Tomlinson started each period with the starters, so if I had to guess, I'd say he gets the start Monday night over Shonn Greene.

7. Practice ended with rookie CB Brian Jackson interceptiong QB Kevin O'Connell in a two-minute drill. Ryan really likes Jackson.

8. There is no public practice Sunday, only a walk-through.
