JetNation
NFL.com is reporting that the New York Jets have a July 1st deadline to inform SUNY-Cortland whether or not the team will be holding their training camp on the school’s campus. The Jets have traveled up to SUNY-Cortland the last two years, but the prolonged lockout has the team re-evaluating their plans for the upcoming season (if there even is a season). Based on the team’s recent actions to cut costs (reducing employee’s and coaches pay) I would not be surprised to see the Jets hold training camp at their Florham Park facility. This would be good news for all of the New Jersey Jets fans that could not make the trek to upstate New York, but terrible news for the Cortland area as they will be losing significant revenue. Just another trickle down effect from the NFL lockout. The video is set to be released on 6/1/11 and the preview can be found View the full article
flgreen
May 25, 2011 9:17 AM 3 comments Lockout may prompt Jets to move training camp from Cortland to Florham Park this summer BY Manish Mehta The NFL lockout may prompt the Jets to switch training camp sites this summer. NFL.com reported on its website Tuesday that Gang Green has a July 1 deadline to inform SUNY Cortland whether it will be returning to upstate New York later that month for the third consecutive year. A team spokesman told the Daily News Tuesday that July 1 is more of an “internal point of reference (with) some leeway and is subject to (lockout) developments.” The alternative is that the Jets will hold training camp at the team facility in Florham Park, NJ. In March, the Daily News reported how the labor impasse could affect the team’s agreement with SUNY Cortland. The Jets have two years remaining on a three-year contract signed last year with the university. If there is no training camp in Cortland this summer, the Jets would be required to hold camp at the university through 2013, according to the team. There are also two two-year team options to extend the partnership. In 2009, Rex Ryan moved camp to Cortland to eliminate distractions for his players. The Jets held training camp at Hofstra for the previous 40 years. The three-week training camp in 2009 had a reported $4.2 million impact on the area. Last year, the Jets entered into a three-year deal that would keep it in Cortland through 2012. (Per terms of the agreement, Cortland prepared two grass fields and renovated dorms. Last year's camp attracted approximately 41,000 people and had an economic impact of $4.7 million, according to a study by the university). If the Jets don't go to Cortland this summer, it can exercise the first of two two-year club options after the 2013 camp. In all, the team and university could maintain a partnership through 2017.
