Broncos | Tim Tebow unlikely to play in Pro Bowl

Denver Broncos QB Tim Tebow (rib, lung, shoulder) is unlikely to play in the 2012 Pro Bowl if any quarterbacks ahead of him drop out due to injury. Tebow bruised his chest and right shoulder and also tore rib cartilage during the team's loss to the New England Patriots in the Divisional round last weekend. He likely wouldn't have been able to play in the AFC Championship had the team advanced. No surgery is expected to be needed, and he's expected to make a full recovery.

Tim Tebow's injuries could have prevented him from playing in AFC title game

Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow suffered bruises to his chest and right (nonthrowing) shoulder and torn rib cartilage during Saturday night's playoff game at New England, an NFL source said Wednesday. Had the Broncos defeated the Patriots, Tebow probably wouldn't have been able to play in the AFC championship game this weekend.

And if he is selected to the AFC's Pro Bowl team as a second alternate, Tebow likely won't play in the Jan. 29 game in Honolulu because of his injuries, which include bruising around a lung.

But Tebow doesn't need surgery and is expected to participate in the Broncos' offseason conditioning workouts beginning April 16.

Early in the third quarter of the Broncos' 45-10 loss at New England, Tebow was crushed by a Patriots sandwich of Vince Wilfork and Rob Ninkovich. After the game, Tebow wore an ice pack on his right shoulder.

Broncos coach John Fox nearly pulled Tebow out of the game in the third quarter when he was shaken up. Fox had backup Brady Quinn warming up, but Tebow wanted to stay in the game and he played through the pain.

Asked later why he finished the game, Tebow said: "Sometimes you get hit. Sometimes it can hurt a little bit. But I wanted to play that game."

Tebow, who was moving Tuesday without any noticeable pain, is receiving treatment at the Broncos' Dove Valley headquarters this week.

This isn't the first time Tebow has dealt with pain in his right shoulder. The former Heisman Trophy winner had surgery on that shoulder in January 2009 to remove a bone spur that created chronic inflammation.

ESPN.com first reported Tebow's postseason injuries Wednesday.
