Don't get your hopes up on Ijalana, but if, IF he can get healthy and start playing effectively, then maybe he can make a difference in 2013.

Back in August of 2012, Colts offensive lineman Ben Ijalana tore his ACL during training camp. This was an injury to the same knee that cost him much of his rookie season in 2011.* Ijalana, who was taken with the 49th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft after the Colts traded up in the second round to acquire him, was then amazingly placed on the waived-injured list. When no team put a claim in for him, Ijalana was placed on Injured Reserve for 2012.

The decision to subject Ijalana to waivers was the strongest signal that the new regime in Indianapolis did not have much faith in him. Prior to the injury, reports from OTAs and camp did not reflect well on the former Villanova standout, including a comment from Mike Chappell that, back when he was still on the Colts roster, Peyton Manning did not think much of Ijalana. In fact, Ijalana was reportedly in danger of simply being released outright before his second knee injury in 11 months.

Unfortunately, Ijalana is yet another player from the Chris Polian-controlled drafts now be labeled "bust." Prior to Ijalana, the last offensive lineman Chris Polian traded up for in the second round was Tony Ugoh.

As we get closer and closer to the first in a series of OTAs for the 2013 Indianapolis Colts, a few eyes will be on Ijalana, who has remained in Indianapolis to rehab his knee. IF he is healthy, and IF he can figure out how to play competitively at this level, Ijalana can become a bit of an X-Factor on this new Colts offensive line.

Now, it's important to keep this in mind: The Colts clearly have little faith in either Ijalana's chances of staying healthy or his playing ability (or both). They signed free agent Donald Thomas to a four-year deal and retained Joe Reitz. They also have Mike McGlynn, who was signed as a UFA last year. Any thought of Ijalana returning to right tackle were squashed when Gosder Cherilus was inked to a five-year deal with Indianapolis in March. It's also very possible general manager Ryan Grigson could draft another guard.

Clearly, Grigson has a strategy to move on from Ijalana. So, any of you hopeless romantics out there thinking "there's still a chance" need a bucket of ice water dumped on your heads.

That said, if Ijalana can get it together an prove to both this coaching staff and front office that he was worth the 49th pick, that would be a HUGE boost to the Colts offense in 2013. Should Ijalana last until training camp, it's worth keeping an eye on him and his progress.

* It's not completely clear if the same knee was injured both years or not. See the links from reader Arminian in the comments below for context.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A day after the New York Jets make their final cuts for the 53-man roster, the team made some other roster moves.

The Jets have acquired three players off waivers, RB Alex Green from Green Bay, T Ben Ijalana from Indianapolis and LB Scott Solomon from Tennessee. On Saturday the Jets cut backup quarterback Greg McElroy and wide receivers Ben Obomanu and Mohamed Massaquoi to reduce their roster to the mandatory 53-player limit.

McElroy was competing with Matt Simms, who made the roster, for a backup role. Newly signed Graham Harrell is still around, giving the Jets four quarterbacks with rookie Geno Smith and the injured Mark Sanchez.

Jets claim Scott Solomon, Ben Ijalana

The Jets announced Sunday afternoon that they claimed three players off of waivers, including the previously reported addition of running back Alex Green.

The other two new members of the squad are linebacker Scott Solomon and tackle Ben Ijalana. The Jets released running back Khalil Bell and linebacker Danny Lansanah and placed linebacker Josh Mauga on injured reserve to make room for the new additions.

Solomon was a seventh-round pick in Tennessee last season and played 13 games for the Titans as a rookie. Ijalana was a second-round pick of the Colts in 2011, but only played four games with the team after tearing his ACL early in training camp last year. He’s also had multiple hip surgeries, so injuries have been something of a problem for Ijalana to this point in his career.

The Jets also added six players to their practice squad, all of whom were in training camp with the team. They are wide receiver Michael Campbell, linebacker Troy Davis, defensive tackle Tevita Finau, safety Rontez Miles, tight end Chris Pantale and tackle J.B. Shugarts.

The Jets today announced another series of personnel moves as they fine-tune their roster on the eve of Week 1.

The team claimed Alex Green, Ben Ijalana and Scott Solomon off waivers today. To make room on the 53-man roster, Kahlil Bell and Danny Lansanah were released. The Jets shifted Josh Mauga to injured reserve.

Green, a running back who last season led the Green Bay Packers in rushing with 464 yards, takes Bell's spot at running back, behind Bilal Powell and Chris Ivory.

Ijalana, a North Brunswick native, offers intriguing promise. The Indianapolis Colts selected the offensive tackle in the second round of the 2011 draft, but Ijalana spent all but four games of his first two seasons on injured reserve.

Solomon is a hybrid edge pass rusher. After the Tennessee Titans drafted him in the seventh round in 2012, he lined up at defensive end and appeared in 13 games. He switched to linebacker this offseason and did not make the Titans Saturday.

The Jets also announced seven additions to their practice squad, all players cut by the team this week. One spot remains on the practice squad. Lansanah, a linebacker who had an impressive preseason, is also a candidate.

Here is the current practice squad:

Michael Campbell (WR/6-2/205/Temple/Edison)

Troy Davis (LB/6-2/251/Central Florida/Queens, N.Y.)

Tevita Finau (DT/6-5/288/Utah/Lahaina, Hawaii)

Rontez Miles (S/6-0/203/California (PA)/Braddock, Pa.)

Chris Pantale (TE/6-5/254/Boston College/Wayne)

J.B. Shugarts (T/6-6/299/Ohio State/Klein, Texas)

Dalton Freeman (C/6-5/291/Clemson/Pelion, S.C.)

Claimed and awarded on waivers to the Jets are RB Alex Green (from Green Bay), T Ben Ijalana (from Indianapolis) and LB Scott Solomon (from Tennessee).

To make room for those three players, we released RB Kahlil Bell and LB Danny Lansanah and placed Josh Mauga (back) on IR.

The seven players added to the practice squad, all of whom were in the Jets' training camp, are:

■ WR Michael Campbell

■ LB Troy Davis

■ DT Tevita Finau

■ C Dalton Freeman

■ S Rontez Miles

■ TE Chris Pantale

■ T J.B. Shugarts

The Jets have one spot left to fill on the practice squad.

Green (6'0", 220), who played his college ball at Hawai‘i, was the third-round pick of the Packers (96th overall) in 2011  He played in 16 regular-season games with four starts in 2011-12 and has 138 rushing attempts for 475 yards (3.4 yards/carry) and 19 receptions for 131 yards (6.9 avg). This preseason for the Pack he had 21 carries for 72 yards (3.4 avg.) and two catches for 14 yards.

Ijalana (6'4", 322), out of Villanova, was the second-round pick (49th overall) of the Colts in '11. He played in four games that year for Indy and didn't play in any games last season.

ok I got my o-lineman, and the RB depth is nice.

the solomon pick up may be to replace coples short term, and have nothing to do with douzable.  he seems like a good replacement.  mcintire or whoever replaced him in the giants game got destroyed in the run game, so they need a big athletic body for that side
