The Jets ended the season on a winning note in Miami to finish 4 and 12 on the season, then Black Monday came in without any delay. Rex Ryan and John Idzik were both fired on Monday morning. Woody Johnson held a press conference on Monday and discussed the direction of the team.

Former GMs Ron Wolf and Charley Casserly were brought in as consultants and they will work with Woody to select the next general manager, and possibly coach. The new general manager will inherit the 6th pick in the NFL Draft and a lot of salary cap room.

Listen in as Brandon Dowling and Joe Blewett discuss the candidates and what direction the Jets are headed in. Give us a call at (646) 716-4697 and let us know how you feel about these changes.

Listening to this now... overall, it has been good.

That said, the whining about the Jets interviewing Quinn because "he has the same resume as Rex" is puzzling.

There are typically only 3 paths to becoming a head coach, through offense, defense or special teams (which is rare). Eliminating one of those paths because the previous guy having taken it too, which is a point that was made by the guy whining, makes zero sense if you truly believe in finding the best candidate. Quinn may have similar experience to Rex, but could be a wholly better coach. The path of experience is not indicative of ones ability to do the next job. Really hard to find logic in this. One of Rex's biggest shortcomings is that he was so offensively inept that he couldn't staff the offensive side of the ball, just because this was Rex's shortcoming doesn't mean it will be the same for Bowles or Quinn... and yes, hiring assistant coaches for his staff is 100% Rex's job. Rex also had a horrid influence on the types of players that were added to the offense. Sanchez was "his guy", as were Holmes and Plax, Conner, cut Woodhead, didn't give Tebow a chance, insists on wildcat, etc. That doesn't mean that Bowles or Quinn or any other defensive guy would have that horrible an influence on the offense.

Look back over this league's history, there are plenty of head coaches that started on one side of the ball and when they became head coaches there were completely capable of owning it all. Just because Rex couldn't and you "love Rex" doesn't mean others cannot ascend.
