10 Roster Spot Battles to Watch on Jets this pre-season

1. RB #4 - Trenton Cannon vs Josh Adams vs some unknown late roster cut
   Top 3 spots are set with Bell, Gore, and Perine.  Assuming the Jets keep 4 RBs, which they might not, it will come down to the dependable special teamer Cannon vs the highly touted but lowly productive Adams.  A talented RB from another team who can play special teams that gets cut late might be a target as well
2. WR #5 - Josh Doctson vs Vyncint Smith vs Lawrence Cager
   Top 3 WRs are set with Crowder, Breland, and Mims and you have to figure Berrios will earn a spot as a PR and backup slot WR.  That leaves the former 1st rounder Doctson, the athletic Smith and the intriguing UDFA Cager fighting for the 5th spot. Of course it's possible the team will carry 6 WRs and 2 of the 3 will make it
3. Offensive Linemen #9 & #10 - Jonothan Harrison vs Conor McDermott vs Ben Braden vs Josh Andrews vs Jared Hilbers 
   The 1st 8 OL spots are safe with Becton, Fant, Edoga at T, Lewis, Van Roten, Winters (if healthy) at G, McGovern at C, and Clark at G/T.  That leaves 1 or 2 spots.  Harrison is a decent backup at C/G and McDermott is a decent G/T backup.  Harrison seems safer and McDermott, Braden and Andrews might fight it out for the last spot with UDFA Hilbers (if the Jets keep 10 OL)
4. Outside LB #4 - John Franklin-Myers vs Frankie Luvu vs Bryce Huff
   I think veteran Jordan Jenkins, improving Tarell Basham, and draftee Jabari Zuniga are safe at OLB.  Franklin-Myers is a big athletic player but is always banged up, Luvu is a solid backup, and Huff was a coveted UDFA and college pass rush phenom. 
5. Inside LB #3 & #4 - Blake Cashman vs Harvey Langi vs Neville Hewitt vs James Burgess
   CJ Mosely and Avery Williamson are safe (assuming both are healthy), that leaves a quartet of talented players fighting for 2 spots.  Cashman showed potential before being hurt last year, Langi and Hewitt are solid vets who contribute on special teams and Burgess is a tough physical old school ILB. 
   (I'm assuming Free Agent Signee Patrick Onwuaswor is making the team at either OLB or ILB)
6. Cornerback #6 - Nate Hairston vs Arthur Maulet vs Lamar Jackson
   Brian Poole, Pierre Desir, and draftee Bryce Hall are locks.  Draft Day tradee Quincy Wilson is probably a safe bet as well.  Also have to think Bless Austin showed enough as a rookie to be a safe bet for the #5 spot.  That leaves solid vet Hairston, 12 game stater Maulet, and touted UDFA Jackson fighting for the last spot at corner
7. Safety #4 - Bennett Jackson vs Matthias Farley vs Anthony Cioffi vs Shyheim Carter
   Jamal Adams, Marcus Maye, and draftee Ashtyn Davis are locks at Safety.  That leaves an intriguing 4-man battle for the last spot.  Jackson is athletic and contributed on special teams late in the year, Farley is an experienced vet who also helps on special teams, Rutgers grad Cioffi made it to the final cut down with the Raiders and played well in the CFL for 2 years and versatile UDFA Carter drew high praise from Nick Saban for his all around play in college
8. Placekicker -  Sam Ficken vs Brett Maher vs someone else
   Ficken started out bad but gradually improved to be an average NFL kicker by the end of the year.  If he can keep improving, he might win the job. Maher has a big leg but was obviously inconsistent with the Cowboys.  They will likely battle it out all 4 preseason games - if neither takes a step up and looks like a valid option, the Jets will be scouring the waiver wire and trying out unemployed vets once again

1.  Cut Cannon.

2.  Keep Cager for sure.  Have Doctson, Smith and Berrios battle for a 6th spot.  Send Campbell to the PS.  

3.  Keep Harrison and Andrews.  Send Hilbers to the PS.  

4.  Keep Huff.

5.  Keep Cashman and Hewitt.

6.  Keep Maulet.  Send Jackson to the PS.

7.  Keep Carter.

8.  Waiver wire.
