Colts | Team could face cap penalties

Sat, 4 Mar 2006 11:35:33 -0800

Mike Chappell, of the Indianapolis Star, reports the Indianapolis Colts and several other teams might have a difficult time getting under the $94.5 million salary cap if there is no extension reached for the collective bargaining agreement. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said there has never been an instance where a team was over the cap. Commissioner Paul Tagliabue determines whether a team will face fine and/or forfeiture of draft picks as a penalty.

Ouch. Do you think everybody gets under the cap?

Why would it be any more difficult than the Jets getting under? They have to cut players or restructure contracts until they are under. If they have to play with all rookies around Manning, Harrison, and Wayne next year too bad.

Fines are unacceptable penalties unless it's like $10M+ or $100K/day. Losing draft picks will motivate teams to get under the cap fast, particularly if it starts with their 2nd-rounder, next week it's also their 1st-rounder, & the week after that it's also next year's 1st-rounder.
