shim.gif Rally or freefall in the cards for struggling Bengals? By PFW staff

Oct. 15, 2007

For the first time in Marvin Lewis' tenure as head coach, the Bengals have lost four straight games. Their latest loss came Sunday at Kansas City, when the Chiefs, who had one of the league's most listless offenses entering the game, got big games from QB Damon Huard and RB Larry Johnson en route to a 27-20 win. The Bengals struggled with problems old (a defense that has surrendered 136 points in its last four outings, a lack of a consistent running game) and new (OLT Levi Jones' struggles in pass protection). It may only be mid-October, but the Bengals, now three games off the pace in the AFC North, face a must-win game vs. the Jets this coming Sunday.

The PFW spin

Is there hope left for the Bengals? The schedule would seem to indicate as much. The Bengals have some favorable matchups in the weeks to come. The 1-4 Jets are perhaps even more hapless than the Bengals, with a budding QB controversy to go with a defense that's a lot like Cincinnati's: Lacking on playmakers, lacking in results. After that, the Bengals draw Pittsburgh at home and visit Buffalo and Baltimore. If the Bengals can hit their stride, there's no reason they can't beat the Jets and Bills and score a win vs. either Pittsburgh or Baltimore
