Jets: NFL Toughest Marketing

IMO, the Jets are one of the toughest organizations to market these days, and have improbable chances of signing seasoned veterans. Here are some of the reasons:

1. History and Tradition - Media is enamoured with successful teams that have made this multi-billion industry what it is today. NY Jets simply are considered the redhaired stepchild of the NFL, with the only exemption of 1969, and what do you always hear first? Colts upset by the Jets. When you ask a sports fan, what is NFL to you? Most of the responses will be tradition, honor, toughness...and with a little more elaboration, Steelers, Cowboys, Bears, Rams, Colts, Patriots. Just try to find NY Jets jerseys in Korean Shops (here in Korea). You may find Namath, and Martin jerseys if you are lucky.

2. Home Games - Home-coming games? For the love of God, we play in Giants stadium, currently the most beloved team in the NFL. How embarrasing can that be? Playing the same stadium as the Superbowl Champs, which by the way, is now considered the biggest Super Bowl upset ever! This does not help at all when it comes to marketing, regardless of our loyalty as die-hard Jets fan. We will live under the Giants shadow unless we relocate to our own stadium. Only then, we might start earning some respect around the league.

3. Young Staff - Fagini's had a one-year wonder thus far, and his wanna-be drill sergeant reputation falls short that-of Parcells' and Billicheats'. The way he handled veterans like Mawae and Kendall are primary examples of his inexperience as a head coach; and it has been bad for this team. Mawae already made the playoffs with the Titans, along with Kendall's first year as a Redskins- playoffs! Do you think the Jets players like Mangini? Credit to Mangini- he likes smart players with good attitude, etc.

4. Free Agency- Seasoned NFL players have changed the mentallity of big contracts, the new trend is retiring with a ring. Jets are not in position to become contenders anytime soon, the OL is questionable, there is a QB controversy, and some veteran players not contented with their salaries (A la carte Coles). Bottom line- Solid and hard working veteran players wants to win games and a ring.

5. New York in general - not many of these corn-farmers like the big attention from the media. In addition, we are brutal fans that are quick to judge and not forgiving.

Good post. Not entirely true though. We forgive, we just never forget!

Noting has came easy for this team since Superbowl 3. The way we even won that year it just seems like we never belong there in the first place.

I belive with all my heart Joe Namath sold his soul to the devil when we won superbowl 3. The Jets Curse is like the Cubs curse. We all the longest drought of a Superbowl of any current NFL team.

The Jets fans have no time for players every season. When one player has a bad year they want the rush that player out the door. When the Jets do what the Giants did last season play as a team you will see a championship back with Gang Green.

BUT AGAIN STUFF TAKES TIME.
