There appears to have been a major break in the Yankees' negotiations with free-agent left-hander CC Sabathia, and the sides appear closer than ever to a deal.

"From (Tuesday) morning until (Tuesday) night, things are looking a lot more positive in terms of us signing this guy," one Yankees official said. "If you'd asked me at 11:00 (Tuesday) morning, I'd have told you no way. But right now, we have a real shot."

Part of the reason for the increased optimism was the third meeting in three days between Sabathia and Yankees GM Brian Cashman. According to a person close to the situation, who declined to be identified because he's not authorized to speak for Cashman. Cashman flew to San Francisco on Tuesday afternoon to meet with Sabathia and his wife at the pitcher's request.

Sabathia requested meetings with Cashman on Sunday and Monday in Las Vegas to ask questions about living and pitching in New York. The Yankees offered him six years and $140 million three and a half weeks ago, but he had been waiting for offers from the Angels and Giants, since his preference is to stay close to home and pitch in California.

It's possible those offers could still come, but developments Tuesday indicated a strengthening of the Yankees' position.
