faba
Updated: Mar. 7, 2005, 4:48 PM ET Slow 40 times could hurt Gore, Morency By Todd McShay, Scouts Inc. Todd McShay Archive Only a few days separated the end of the 2005 NFL scouting combine and the start of "pro day" workouts. Kicking off this phase were Miami and Missouri on March 3. Scouts snickered at Miami CB Antrel Rolle's decision to leave the combine early, but after an impressive outing in Coral Gables Thursday, few people are questioning him. The 6-0, 201-pound cornerback ran a 4.49 in the 40-yard dash and had a 37-inch vertical jump. He also looked smooth and explosive in his position and agility drills. In what has turned out to be a two-horse race with Adam "Pac-Man" Jones (West Virginia) to be the first cornerback to come off the board, Rolle certainly put the pressure on Jones, who will work out March 11 in Morgantown, W.Va. Frank Gore is in great shape but will his injured knees hinder his chances in the NFL?The other critical workout at Miami's pro timing day was that of RB Frank Gore. The early-entry running back has trimmed down to 208 pounds and is in terrific shape, but his 40-yard dash times of 4.65 and 4.67 didn't help. Because of two previous season-ending knee injuries and below average speed, teams will be extremely hesitant to take a chance on Gore with a first-day pick. Oklahoma State RB Vernand Morency also hurt his draft value when he ran a 4.67 and a 4.68 at Miami's pro timing day. The 5-9, 212-pound back was supposed to run the 40 in the high 4.4s. As a result, Morency easily could slip out of second-round range. Missouri OLB James Kinney and RB Damien Nash both improved their draft stock with impressive showings at Missouri's pro timing day. Kinney was an ultra-productive three-year starter for the Tigers, but there were questions regarding his measurables as they pertained to the NFL. After the 6-0, 244-pounder ran the 40 in the low-4.6s and ran the short-shuttle in 4.32, those questions were answered. Nash, who left school early after a frustrating junior season in which his touches dipped considerably, helped himself by running in the mid-4.5s at nearly 5-10 and 218 pounds. On-campus workouts will last through the first week of April. I will continue to update the key performances every Monday.
