Share CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Santonio Holmes was excused from the first five practices of training camp, to be with his 8-year-old son, who just had surgery (more on that later). But he made sure to make his presence known in his first practice back.

In 7-on-7 drills, he made a diving catch in the back of the end zone on a Mark Sanchez pass, with cornerback Dwight Lowery on coverage. Sanchez sprinted to the end zone and jumped on him, while the crowd in attendance cheered.

Holmes lined up with the first-team offense in the first rep of 11-on-11s but worked with both the first and second team, as coach Rex Ryan indicated would be the case. Other notes from the session, in which players were in shells:

LB Brashton Satele went down on a kickoff coverage drill. He was helped off the field with an apparent lower-leg injury.

DE Shaun Ellis, who rested during the morning session with a slight hip flexor injury, was back on the field. NT Kris Jenkins also practiced.

Sanchez opened practice completing his first four passes, connecting with Braylon Edwards, Jerricho Cotchery, LaDainian Tomlinson and Dustin Keller.

CB Drew Coleman has had a strong camp. He ended practice by picking off QB Kellen Clemens -- I believe his second INT of the day and third of camp.

LB Jamaal Westerman had a would-be sack of QB Mark Brunell.

Rex Ryan joined the kickoff coverage team in a walk-through, racing downfield as the crowd cheered.

Afternoon practice report

August, 4, 2010 Aug 47:52PM ETEmail Print Comments By Jane McManusThis afternoon's practice was all about Santonio Holmes. The wide receiver arrived today and took the field for the afternoon practice. His big moment camp during a a series where he caught a touchdown pass in the end zone from Mark Sanchez.

It got the Jets cheering, and Sanchez ran toward Holmes to congratulate him as someone yelled, "Welcome to camp!"

Eariler Rex Ryan brought a little levity when he covered on a slow-motion kickoff coverage drill, running downfield with the crowd cheering him on.

UFA Brashton Satele went down on a later drill, grabbing his left ankle. The linebacker was helped off the field but seemed to be able to put some weight on the leg.

CB Drew Coleman and S Eric Smith both had picks, and CB Antonio Cromartie showed more of the ballhawk skills that have earned him respect already.

NT Kris Jenkins and DE Shaun Ellis both practiced.

I noticed a few "Sign Revis" placards in the crowd. No indication that Darrelle Revis will be arriving soon however.
