Buddy Ryan, whose twin sons Rex and Rob Ryan followed him into coaching careers, is batting cancer, according to a report in the New York Daily News.

Rex Ryan told the Daily News at the league meetings in New Orleans that his father was diagnosed with cancer "a couple of weeks ago" and Tuesday was at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York to receive a second opinion.

The Jets coach declined to get into specifics, but said the cancer was not melanoma, which Buddy Ryan has beaten twice. He said his father "should be all right."

"It's going to take more than this to get rid of him," Rex Ryan told the Daily News. "That's what he always says."

Rex Ryan often speaks about his father publicly and proudly, frequently referencing his noted "46 defense" perfected with the world champion Bears in 1985. When Rex Ryan was hired as the Jets coach in 2009, it was particularly special because Buddy Ryan had been an assistant for the franchise from 1968-75, including the team's lone championship in Super Bowl III.

The Jets were not among the five teams fined by the NFL for illegal contact with players after the season ended, according to a person with direct knowledge of whether the Jets received a fine. That person requested anonymity because the league has not announced the five teams.

Commissioner Roger Goodell revealed Tuesday at the league meetings that five teams had been penalized for improper conduct in January and February -- not in relation to the current lockout.
