Injury-plagued cornerback Dee Milliner, the ninth overall draft pick in 2013, was placed on injured reserve/designated for return by the New York Jets on Sunday, the team announced.Milliner, who underwent Aug. 7 wrist surgery after a training camp injury, will be eligible to play after eight weeks and would miss seven games because the Jets have a bye in Week 5. Milliner can start practicing after Week 6.

Each team is allowed to place one player on short-term IR. It came as no surprise that the Jets chose Milliner, whom they said would miss six to eight weeks at the time of the surgery.The Jets can afford to put Milliner on the slow track because of their depth at cornerback. Even if he had remained healthy, he would have been no better than the No. 4 corner. The team made a major investment in its secondary during the offseason, signing Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie and Buster Skrine as free agents.

Milliner hurt a tendon in his right wrist on Aug. 6 when he tried to jam a wide receiver in practice. It came a week after he returned from an Achilles tendon injury that caused him to miss most of the 2014 season and the ensuing offseason.In two seasons, marked by uneven play, Milliner has missed 16 of 32 games.To fill Milliner's roster spot, the Jets re-signed wide receiver Chris Owusu, whom they waived Saturday. He becomes the top candidate to return kickoffs in the season opener.

In other roster moves, the Jets acquired rookie safety Ronald Martin, an undrafted free agent from LSU, on waivers from the Seattle Seahawks. To make room, the Jets waived safety Rontez Miles, who had a solid preseason.Miles recorded 23 tackles in four games and scored on a fumble recovery. He has practice-squad eligibility and could return if he clears waivers.

There's nothing in sports quite like the NFL's cutdown weekend, which produces wild swings of emotion for players on the roster bubble. You can think you've made the team on one day, and be gone the next.It happened to safety Rontez Miles, a former undrafted free agent who became a fan favorite with 23 tackles and a fumble-recovery touchdown in the preseason. On Saturday, after surviving the New York Jets' cut to 53, he expressed his joy on Twitter.

@RontezMiles

Thanks to all the fans my friends and family for the support!!!! Blessed and Horned to be a #jet #GangGreen #freedom

Then came Sunday -- and heartbreak.

To make room for rookie Ronald Martin, whom they claimed on waivers from the Seattle Seahawks, the Jets released Miles. It was a curious move because it's not like Martin's credentials jump off the page. Actually, he's a lot like Miles -- an undrafted safety known as a big hitter, not a silky smooth pass defender. Evidently, the Jets liked Martin's preseason tape (10 solo tackles, third on the Seahawks) and saw something in their draft reports that intrigued them.

"I've got tape and I know I can play in this league," Miles said late Thursday night after the final preseason game, claiming he was "at peace" with his situation.Miles was credited with 23 tackles and he scored on a fumble recovery in the preseason, so he must be thinking, "What do you have to do to make this team?" He still has practice-squad eligibility, so there's a chance he can return, if he clears waivers. But it wouldn't be the same as being on the 53-man roster.

In the big picture, maybe this isn't a big deal. After all, we're talking about one of the last spots on the roster, but it illustrates the madness of the NFL in early September.In other moves, the Jets re-signed wide receiver Chris Owusu, whom they released on Saturday. Barring other moves, he probably will be their kickoff returner in Week 1 against the Cleveland Browns. They have no other player with experience as a kickoff returner, so this was a move that had to be made.

Overcoming a concussion, the fourth of his college and pro career, Owusu finished the preseason with a five-catch, 72-yard, one-touchdown performance in the finale.
