Bell played for Bears, Eagles in 1980s

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Former Ohio State star safety Todd Bell died Wednesday morning of an apparent heart attack while driving his car to Columbus, the school announced.

Bell, who also competed on Ohio State's track team, was a four-year starter with the Buckeyes from 1977-80, earning All-Big Ten Conference honors in his junior and senior seasons.

In 1979, Bell recorded 87 tackles and scored two touchdowns, including the winning score in an 18-15 triumph at archrival Michigan in which he gathered a blocked punt and ran it into the end zone. The triumph sent the 11-0 Buckeyes into the Rose Bowl, where they lost to Southern California, 17-16.

Bell was drafted by the Chicago Bears in 1981 and played for the team until 1987. He earned Pro Bowl honors in 1984, but he missed their 1985 Super Bowl season on injured reserve.

Bell finished his career by playing with the Philadelphia Eagles from 1988-89.
