Zone Blocking Experiment OVER!

The Jets pursuit of Runyan sends one clear signal..... the zone blocking experiment is over. Runyan is a prototypical power man blocking RT. I never did like zone blocking, and I'm glad it's in the rear view mirror.

This will have a fairly large affect on what O linemen the Jets will look at in the draft too. It should also have some impact on what kind of RB we might look to pick up....

Thoughts?

With Brick being on the lite side of things is he considered a zone blocking o linmen???

Yes, but we have that figured out.

The Jets are going to send Brick to the Chiefs training camp for the lack of conditioning and the BBQ. EWhen he has adequately bulked up we will get him back.

Not really.... if we have a right handed QB. Ferguson's ability to run block in a man scheme is questionable, but LT's need to be able to have the foot speed to protect the QB in either scheme. Jones isn't a good man blocker either in the running game. A moblie QB is important in the zone scheme too. So, IMO, Brick works in either scheme, for what you want from a LT. Neither Brick or Jones are suited to the RT spot for a man blocking scheme though.

For man blocking, you usually look for a road grader at RT, like Runyan. Athletic speed guys like D'Brick and Jones usually don't do very well in a man scheme on the right side.

To make things worse, the Jets never commited to Zone blocking.... if you run zone, you have to use it all the time, or it's ineffective. The linemen always slant and cut back block, moving as a unit towards one sideline or the other. The defense tries to slide with the O linemen, trying to maintain their gap responsibilty. This cause the defense to often over pursue, leaving them vulnerable to a cut back move by the RB, or a reverse side roll out by the QB, in the opposite direction of the line flow.

With mobile guys like Vick and Plummer, it works much better. Last year, the Jets didn't have a QB that was a good fit to zone blocking.

Man blocking is also a scheme that needs a whole new game plan every week, based on the opponent, while the zone scheme changes little from one week to the next. Teams that use zone often make the playoffs, but usaully lose once they get there. It isn't a very flexable scheme that tries to get mismatches based on the opponent's weaknesses.
