Jets: Minicamp aims

New Jets coach Eric Mangini will oversee his first minicamp starting today. Here are three things to ponder over the next three days.

1. CAN THE JETS COUNT ON QB CHAD PENNINGTON?

Pennington, the one-time franchise quarterback, has been throwing since March 1, but the media will get its first peek at him during this minicamp. Mangini has been mum on Pennington's progress, and some in the organization wonder if Pennington will ever regain his form after two shoulder surgeries in the past two years.

The Jets obtained QB Patrick Ramsey (Redskins) and drafted Kellen Clemens in the second round. Pennington has a slight edge because he's usually mistake-free, while Ramsey has a penchant for throwing interceptions.

2. HOW WILL THE OFFENSIVE LINE LOOK?

The Jets drafted University of Virginia left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson with the fourth pick overall and tapped Ohio State center Nick Mangold with their 29th selection overall (obtained in the John Abraham trade).

Both players, who were the top-rated at their positions, are expected to step into the starting lineup, providing pass protection (the Jets lost three QBs to injuries last season) and sparking the running game. Scouts say Ferguson could be the Jets' starting left tackle for the next decade.

3. HOW WILL MANGINI BE RECEIVED?

Mangini is a matter-of-fact coach who believes in schemes more than rah-rah speeches. As a result, he'll have to win his team over with his knowledge and savvy, proving to them that if they do what he asks, they'll win. Period.
