He's made a lot of progress and I'm pleased with what he's done so far."

Fri, 28 Jul 2006 14:49:42 -0700

During his press conference, <A href="http://www.kffl.com/team/27/nfl">New York Jets head coach Eric Mangini said he was encouraged by the way WR Brad Smith has made steady improvement. Smith is making the transition from a quarterback in college to being a wide receiver in the NFL. Mangini said, "What I like about Brad is that each day he makes progress. And it's a different thing each day. It could be his footwork on a route. It could be hand placement. It could be working on releases. But, he's a really smart guy coming from a QB background. He's got an appreciation for the whole defense and he works at it. And that's encouraging. Obviously, it is very early and we've got a long way to go, but I think the fact that he makes steady improvement is encouraging."

During his press conference Friday, July 28, <A href="http://www.kffl.com/team/27/nfl">New York Jets head coach Eric Mangini addressed the competition at quarterback between QB Chad Pennington, QB Patrick Ramsey, QB Kellen Clemens and QB Brooks Bollinger. "Each step of the way has been an evaluation for us. In terms of the initial camps, the offseason program, the classroom, all of those things that led to this point. And now we're at the next phase with the pads on and we've got a long way to go here as well. A lot of reps have to be taken and a lot of things have to be looked at with a preseason game in the near future."

Jets | No timetable for Martin's return

Fri, 28 Jul 2006 15:13:05 -0700

During his press conference Friday, July 28, <A href="http://www.kffl.com/team/27/nfl">New York Jets head coach Eric Mangini addressed the severity of RB Curtis Martin's (knee) knee injury. "There is really no timetable. As soon as they are ready to go, we're going to put them out there. The nice thing about PUP is it allows you to, as soon as the player is able to practice - he can practice - and you can take him off the PUP at any point. We can take him off today, tomorrow, the next day. And there's a lot of flexibility with that as opposed to injured reserve where there is no flexibility with that situation. PUP is a good tool for us in all these scenarios."
