The "Miller's Time" Edition of Post of the Week - May 24, 2007

It was just a matter of time before #22, the guy who fell to the Jets in the second round despite a crazy amount of athletic ability, did something stupid. Being a professional athlete in the 21st century demands good behavior or else you end up having your exploits told by the media or on message boards like JetNation. The world is all about instant information - not much can be hidden for long in the age of the internet. Or even worse, you can be stupid about things on your own and post pictures of yourself - like Miller did on MySpace. JetNation had pictures of Miller (and other young Jets) partying in NYC posted here and while they were not bad, they were probably not what the NFL would want to see of its young players. We all know athletes throughout time have not been model citizens, but in this day and age we see everything they do almost instantly. Shame on Miller - especially with the Jets emphasis "Core Values" - for being a dumb a$s at 4am.

Enough from me, on to the fun stuff....

I'm not saying he will be right away but to risk him on returns is not the way to go. Also, Miller is not so easily replaced in that role. The guy is a threat to break one every time he touches the ball and has proved that on many of his returns. He had many big returns that either set them up to win a game or got them back in to a game they were out of. Field position is key to winning football games and Miller is the key to the Jets field position.

Why would Miller be returning punts anyway? That is Leon Washington's job the last time I checked. Also, returning and fielding punts is actually much different than a kickoff. There is much more of a chance for their to be spin on the ball and much less time to prepare to run it back.

As far as him being suspended, it is counter-productive to the team right now. I'm not saying that if he is guilty they should just let him off but Mangini should let the league handle that sort of thing. They need as many game-ready CB's as they can have this year with all the moves New England made. Miller is better as a nickel or dime back than anyone they are gonna find at this point in time. Maybe he should be given a game or two by Mangini but let's not get nuts here. This is his first offense as a member of the NFL IF he is even guilty. Goodell will not be able to hand out a big suspension. Even if he is guilty, the guy got into a fight at a club which is stupid but really not that big of a deal when compared to other offenses that have been committed by NFL players.

(Editor's Note: Justin Miller better be in the best shape of his life when camp starts, me thinks...)

Regardless, if it were illegal midget wrestling, i would still support the league's involvement. Professional athletes are becoming above the law, or at least they seem to feel that way, and it is high time that repercussions stem from illegal or unethical actions taken by these players. I am all for having a private personal life, but it goes with his job. With fame comes privacy invasion, which is partially the reason for their ridiculously high salaries; however, anyone involved in such vile acts should not be free to do so just because they are in the privacy of their residence. The NFL should be involved because they are protecting their assets, as should the Falcons.

What you do at home is your business, so long as it does not affect the well being of others, and so long as it is not against the laws of your country to do so.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Jason Giambi failed an amphetamines test within the last year, the Daily News reported Wednesday.

The newspaper reported that with the failed amphetamines test, Giambi has been subjected to six additional tests for one year. The newspaper did not cite any sources in its report.

Giambi declined comment to the newspaper before the New York Yankees' 7-3 loss to the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night.

The Yankees slugger recently said in a USA Today interview that he was "probably tested more than anybody else."

Before the failed test, lawyers for the commissioner's office and the players' association held more conversations Tuesday on a possible meeting with Giambi but it remained uncertain when or if such a gathering would take place.

Lawyers for Major League Baseball would like to talk to Giambi about comments in last Friday's editions of USA Today.

"I was wrong for doing that stuff," the New York Yankees designated hitter was quoted as saying, remarks some have interpreted as an admission of steroids use.

Management lawyers would like to hold the meeting as soon as is practicable. The failed amphetamines test most likely wouldn't be discussed at a meeting since MLB policy is to keep a first positive test secret.

Hall of Famer Frank Robinson took issue with one of Giambi's comments.

"What we should have done a long time ago was stand up -- players, ownership, everybody -- and said: 'We made a mistake,"' Giambi was quoted as saying. "We should have apologized back then and made sure we had a rule in place and gone forward. ... Steroids and all of that was a part of history. But it was a topic that everybody wanted to avoid. Nobody wanted to talk about it."

Robinson said Giambi should speak for himself.

"If Jason wants to confess, then he should come out and say: `I'm guilty. I apologize. I apologize to baseball. I apologize to all the fans that have supported me and supported baseball over the years. And I will clean up my act and promise you I will not do anything like this again,"' Robinson said during an interview on ESPN. "He should not drag others into (it), because when he says baseball, that includes everybody in baseball."

Before the Yankees played Boston on Tuesday night, Giambi was asked about a report in the New York Post that said the Los Angeles Angels had an interest in acquiring him. Giambi has a full no-trade clause.

"This is all news to me. I'm a Yankee," he said. "It's kind of fun to read. I never asked for it."

Totally disagree. So far, we have two accounts of the incident. The first one goes something like this:

It's 4 AM in a club, Justin Miller takes a swing at some dude, misses, and ends up landing his fist in a girls face. Justin Miller then runs away, where he is later cornered in a parking garage by the police.

The second story goes like this:

The victim and her friends are walking down the street, when they are confronted by Miller and his friends. Miller makes a lewd comment at the victim, the victim verbally responds, and Miller punches her in the face.

OK, two stories. The second one obviously came from the victim and her friends. The first story came from... where? Let me venture a guess, it came from Miller or one of his friends.

Nobody has heard anything but the account of the girl who claims he hit her and her friends and that Justin ran to a parking garage as if he was trying to avoid the Patriots' coverage team. It was said that he ran from the copsOriginally but the new account, according to the girl who claims Miller hit her because she wouldn't hook up with him, sounds more like he was running from her friends and then was arrested because of the claims that were made by those outside the club.

"Wouldn't hook up with him"???

You make it sound like he was asking her for a date. OK, let's pretend he was a complete gentleman, and she was impolite in waiving off his request at her hand.

So he punches her in the face?

If people want to make a joke out of it they can, but we are supposed to be a country that gives a person the benefit of the doubt and at the very least wait until we hear the whole story before we hang a guy. Unfortunately we have become a place that has to have everything right away and just jump on something the second we hear it. I
