The Yankees and Chien-Ming Wang went to arbitration before last season, but they avoided the process today by agreeing to a one-year, $5 million contract for 2009.

Wang, 28, made $4 million in 2008 when a arbitrator picked that figure over Wang's request for $4.6 million.

The Yankees' Opening-Day starter, Wang was 8-2 with a 4.07 ERA in 15 startsbut missed more than half the season with a mid-foot sprain of the Lisfranc ligament and a partial tear of the peroneal longus tendon in his right foot, suffered June 15.

Another example of the Yankees trying to buy a championship. ;)

Are they waiting to see if he is healthy to extend him?
