ATLANTA - General manager Omar Minaya predicted Jeff Francoeur's addition last week wouldn't be the Mets' last maneuver before the trading deadline. Now, it's becoming reality.

After the Braves routed the Mets, 11-0, Friday night, a source told the Daily News that the organization was prepared to release Tim Redding as soon as today and eat his $2.25 million guaranteed contract.

Meanwhile, an AL source revealed that Julio Lugo has been working out at the Mets' complex in the Dominican Republic. The official predicted that once Lugo clears waivers - he was designated for assignment by the Red Sox Friday - the Mets could sign him.

Lugo, 33, looked awful at shortstop in a series against the Mets at Fenway Park in May, but has long been coveted by Minaya. Set back much of the season after right knee surgery in March, he hit .284 with one homer and eight RBI in 109 at-bats.

Lugo has roughly $13.5 million remaining on his original four-year deal with Boston, so the Mets must wait until he is a free agent - as was the case with the Gary Sheffield signing - in order to be responsible only for a prorated portion of the major-league minimum salary of $400,000.

Redding, who relieved Mike Pelfrey in the fifth inning Friday night and allowed a pair of inherited runners to score, plus another of his own, has a 7.22 ERA in 12 appearances (nine starts). He filled the rotation void with Oliver Perez on the disabled list, but had a 6.99 ERA in that role and hasn't adapted to relief, either.

The Mets have been going with only four bench players, so giving Redding's roster spot to a position player will offer some depth while Sheffield sits out at least today's game with what he labeled right hamstring cramping. Sheffield was forced out of left field Friday night in the fifth inning.
