KRL Camp Notes (7/28/13)

General Notes

- Practice was re-scheduled because of the rain this morning and

it started at 3:30 pm. Day totally changed it was sunny & humid

- Players were in full pads for the first time

- Practice ran 1 hour and 20 minutes but it was all offense vs.

defense drills

- Practice was held in Cortland's football stadium which seats about

7 - 10,000. The field appears to be turf not grass about 500 people

showed up. Being in there was like "practice heaven" because you

can sit on the 50 yard line as high as you want to see all the action

- Ivory was padded up but didn't get any reps. Edwards and Winslow

were held out. There was a lot of slipping early on

- One of the big differences in practice this year is it feels like

the coordinators are playing "chess" against each other during the 11

on 11 periods. In years past particularly for the offense it felt

like the OC would stick to a "script" on what he would want to work

on making it easier for the defense to diagnose and stop it. Now

it feels like Mornhinweg and Rex are just "throwing calls" at each

other seeing if the other can stop it

Player Notes

- As the drills started Wilkerson called the defense together and

said "Let's prove who the toughest M***f*** are". And the defense

had an excellent day shutting down the run. Very physical you

could hear the pads popping

- Even though the defense was excellent against the run the offense

still was productive through the air. Another encouraging practice

-Both QB's played well but Smith was better today. Smith finally ran

with the #1's and he showed up. During his 7 on 7 reps he showed the

ability to "throw WR's open" with nice completions to Stephen Hill &

Jeff Cumberland. During his 11 on 11 reps he had the play of the day

with a 35+ yd sideline completion to Hill. He also showed nice poise

against the blitz to find an open man. Finally he also hit Kerley

with a sweet back shoulder throw which had Cro spinning around. In

Sanchez reps he made no mistakes and his best throws were to Hill

during WR vs. CB drills for a 30+ yd TD. And he also showed that

he could "throw WR's open" by hitting Kerley during 7 on 7

- The best WR on the field today was Hill. He's not allowing

himself to get "punked" at the line of scrimmage and so far he's

catching everything

- The key defenders in shutting down the run today were Wilkerson,

Richardson, Ellis & Coples

- Chad Spann deserves another "shout out" he was the only RB that

was able to get any yards running the ball. He's short and stocky

I think he gets lost behind the line and the defense can't find him

- Matt Simms seems to be the #3 QB (about time)

- During 1 on 1 DL vs. Oline drills our rookies displayed their

skills:

* Richardson beat Peterman with speed and power

* Winters beat Garay showing very "heavy hands" during one rep

he put him on the ground

* Aboushi showed nice feet in adjusting to the rush and a good

punch

* Campbell needs work on his feet but has good upper body strength

to hold off the rush even though he was off balance

- The kickers were both perfect today Folk 4/4 Cundiff 3/3

Standouts For The Day

- The run defense

- Smith

- Hill

- Richardson

- Ellis

- Coples

- Wilkerson

- Spann

Monday is my final day in Cortland unfortunately my hotel's check

out time is 12 pm. So when practice is over I won't have access

to the internet. I'll post my notes when I get back to NYC which

should be around 5 pm hopefully there's no traffic

Continued excellent news about Hill.  Love Wilkerson's leadership.  Love the seeming competition between Rex and Mornhinweg.  I think it will perhaps make both better, as well as both units, and bear fruit during the season.  It's hard not to start getting excited.

He's a legend! Most beat writers head out to the bar or dinner after their 20 tweets.... KRL goes back to his room and puts his notes together and gives us his overall impressions based on the entire day. That's what makes it special

Here's another camp report from another Jets' site:

Crazy day here in Cortland with the rainstorm. After a long wait, the sky cleared up and the sun was baking the spectators for the afternoon practice as the Jets got back on the field at 3:30 for their full practice period after having an indoor walk-through that was closed to the public and media. On the field of the stadium in Cortland, here’s some of the collected thoughts we had while watching the Jets out on the turf.

  • The offensive line and defensive lines broke off and did a drill where the defensive players tries to get past one offensive linemen off a snap in a simulated pass rush scenario, one at a time. After an attempt the defensive player moves down to the next offensive player and so on. Here’s some thoughts about that.
    • Watching Nick Mangold take on Muhammad Wilkerson in this drill was like watching Godzilla versus Sharknado as these two just WENT OFF on each other. Wilkerson was the irresistible force, and Mangold was the immovable object. Mangold slowed Wilkerson down nicely, but even up against one of the league’s best centers he didn’t get turned around.
    • In work against other players, WIlkerson showed a nice bull rush as well as a spin move, something you don’t often get to see him do when he works on the inside. It looked pretty damn good to me.
    • Richardson showed his speed and agility coupled with his low pad-level by basically just shooting the gap under one blocker right off the snap.
    • Brian Winters looked solid to me when a defender showed some bad leverage and Winters used a quick one-hand punch to put the defender into the turf.
  • For those concerned about Geno’s transition from shotgun to under center, today Mornhinweg said the move was “almost seamless.” That has showed on the practice field. While he’s clearly still a rookie dropped into an NFL offense, he’s treading water … but not walking on it yet.
  • Zach Rogers is quietly asserting himself among a group of very compelling receivers. He had a very smooth practice and had a number of nice grabs in an opportunity to play with the first team. Braylon Edwards was on the side as was Kellen Winslow, which gave Rogers an opportunity on a few first team snaps in three receiver sets.
  • Chris Ivory was in pads today, but he didn’t get in on practice with the team. The Jets had communicated earlier in the week that he might see the field today, but the coaches are still optimistic he will see the field soon. The team is just being preventative.
  • I know he’s not flashy, but I really like Bilal Powell in all facets of his game. He came on well at the end of last year running the ball and he’s done a few things that have stood out so far in camp. Tonight in practice he had a great pickup in pass protection with the first team which allowed Geno Smith to make a deep completion to Stephen Hill. He also took a short pass to the sideline deep into the secondary. Bilal is making little plays consistently through camp .. that’s a good thing for a team looking for answers past Chris Ivory.
  • It is still very early, but one gets the impression that Stephen Hill is in a groove right now with rookie QB Geno Smith. This is totally conjecture, but I have to wonder if it is because of the velocity of Smith’s passes. The ball spends less time in the air which allows Hill to use his height and explosiveness to quickly grab the ball over much smaller defenders. Passes with a slower velocity take more time to get downfield, allow the defensive back more time to set up, more time to adjust and defend the ball … just a thought …
  • KJ Stroud and Royce Adams got into a short scuffle between them. It was more of the same, players getting a little too physical with each other and someone taking offense … next …
  • John Griffin is a tad on the raw side, but he’s looks promising on the field — and this is a Goodson rebound talking here. Today I asked Marty Mornhinweg specifically about Griffin and he said that Griffin “is an NFL caliber running back” but that he certainly has room for improvement.

Good stuff.

I know this dude likes Simms more than McElroy, but I'm pretty sure that they are alternating Sanchez and Smith with the 1's and 2's and McElroy and Simms with the 3's.  It would be pretty silly for them to have made any change in depth chart based on a couple of days in shells.

I'd rather they decide on the #3 QB sooner than later. Bellicheat is going to pick up McElroy or Simms before that Thursday night game (4 days after our 1st game) I'd prefer the QB cut doesn't have a full

playbook.... we need to hold back a few surprises for NE

This team, especially the D, really has more upside than given credit for. They'll have to earn every inch of it and all that nonsense, but the Jets always seem to do well as underdogs. Hopefully they pretend it's a new coach or whatever and get that new coach's first season magic effect. Ryan is a really talented coach with a "best in the game" trait with defense. That sh*t is a big deal. Once this franchise lands a talent young, healthy guy who can play QB well they will contend for a decade+ easy. Hopefully this Sanchez/Smith situation is Brees/Rivers all over again and hopefully they pick the better one between the two.

Maybe not quite Jeff Garcia level big deal, but it is a big deal to the whole on field football thing.

Know what else is huge? His bottom that you like to so dramatically paint was six wins and a top fifteen defense. ROTFL lets get Grade A Gruden! Gruden and Garcia baby, just like the good old days.
