The Jets defense could be getting one of its key pieces back this week.

Outside linebacker Quinton Coples was on the practice field Monday morning for the first time since fracturing his ankle on Aug. 17 in a preseason game with the Jaguars. The Jets do not have to give a status (questionable, doubtful, probable, etc.) for Coples until the end of the week, but his presence at practice is a sign he could play this week against the Bills.

The Jets expected big things from Coples this season. During training camp he was moving between outside linebacker and the interior of the defensive line. He led the team with 5 ½ sacks last season as a rookie.

Garrett McIntyre has started the first two games for the Jets in Coples’ place.

The Jets waived punter Robert Malone and re-signed punter Ryan Quigley, who was with the team in training camp. Malone had a rough outing in last week’s loss in New England. He averaged 44.6 yards on nine punts and had one punt that went just 21 yards. … The team also signed LB Scott Solomon to fill the roster spot vacated when QB Mark Sanchez was placed on short-term IR. The Jets cut WR Rahsaan Vaughn from the practice squad and brought back LB Danny

Does anyone know Mo Wilk's situation? This could be huge if he's not available. Huge either way, but especially huge if Mo Wilk is out.

I saw ankle sprain, it was unclear if it was the dreaded high ankle sprain. if Mo's out I'll

weep. the d line is the best part this year.

Both Quinton Coples and Muhammad Wilkerson were on the practice field Monday morning – a potentially good sign heading into Sunday’s game against the AFC East rival Bills.

Coples has been a bystander at practice of late after undergoing a procedure on his right ankle. The outside linebacker, and 16th overall pick in 2012, was in shells Monday – along with Wilkerson, who was forced to leave Thursday night’s game at New England with an apparent ankle injury.

Following warmups, both Coples and Wilkerson worked out individually on the side with trainers (mostly doing running drills). After a few minutes of individual work, Wilkerson left Coples on the far field and jogged over to the D-line group.

***

Jeremy Kerley was at practice for the first time since suffering a concussion in Week 1. Kerley – who was crushed by Bucs safety Mark Barron in the Jets’ 18-17 win -- sported a red non-contact jersey during practice.

He fielded some punts during the portion allotted to the media, but Kerley was spotted shaking his left hand repeatedly during special teams drills -- just before catching a punt with his right arm only.

***

Second-year wideout Stephen Hill was on the field for warmups, but was conspicuously absent during position drills. Hill jogged off immediately after the stretching period ended and didn’t come back out during the 20 minutes of practice afforded to the media. He was on the Jets’ injury report last week with a knee injury.

FLORHAM PARK, NJ -- DL Muhammad Wilkerson, WR Jeremy Kerley and LB Quinton Coples all returned to Jets practice Monday morning. Kerley, who had been diagnosed with a concussion the day after the Tampa Bay game, wore a red non-contact jersey.

Wilkerson injured his right ankle in the fourth quarter against the Patriots, and coach Rex Ryan had said after the game he hoped it wasn’t a high ankle sprain. On Monday, Wilkerson participated in individual drills during the open portion of practice.

The 6-foot-4, 315-pound Wilkerson’s return is a good sign for the team, given the relative strength of the defensive line in early play this season. Wilkerson has been a key member of that line, and Coples (6-6, 290) is often used to bolster the end.

Coples sustained a hairline fracture to his right ankle during a preseason game against the Jaguars, and had a medical procedure the next week. The Jets had said he was out indefinitely, but Monday he did agility drills on the sideline while wearing an ankle wrap.

Ryan will hold a newsconference later in the afternoon and could update the conditions.

Given the number of drops, the sure hands of Kerley were missed last Sunday in Foxborough. Rookie starter Geno Smith had a 42.9 completion percentage, due in part to drops from Stephen Hill and Clyde Gates.

If all three of Wilk, Coples and Kerley could play, that would be huge.  After last week's mess, Kerley is actually probably the most important.  I think the Jets D would do fine having even just one of Wilk or Coples, as they could easily move Coples back to the DL without Wilk, but ideally it would be great to have both.

Rex Ryan says Mo, Coples and Kerley "are getting closer" but adds Kerley (concussion) has to go through extra "hoops" to get back.

Doesn't sound as though Wilkerson, Coples or Kerley fully participated, but it's still only Monday. #Jets
