kelly
The Jets released Jeremy Kerley on Wednesday, which meant that they moved into the new league year without their primary punt returner from last season. They may have their eyes on Marcus Sherels to fill that void on the roster. Matt Vensel of theMinneapolis Star-Tribune reported Wednesday night that Sherels is set for a visit with the Jets on Thursday. Sherels made the Vikings practice squad as an undrafted free agent in 2010 and played one game for them late that season. He’s played every game in the last five seasons and while he has seen some time at cornerback, his primary role has been as Minnesota’s punt returner. He’s had success in the role, returning punts for touchdowns in three of the last four seasons and averaging over 10 yards per return over the course of his career. > http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2016/03/10/marcus-sherels-set-for-visit-with-jets/
kelly
Minnesota Vikings cornerback and return man Marcus Sherels will visit with the Jets in Florham Park on Thursday, according to multiple reports. The news of Sherels’ impending visit was first reported by the Star Tribune. Sherels, 28, was originally signed by the Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2010. After spending the majority of his first season on the team’s practice squad, Sherels found a home with the Vikings his second year in the league. While Sherels wasn’t a dominant defender, what he was was a tremendous special teamer. Over the ensuing five seasons, Sherels never missed a game, seeing action as a spot-duty cornerback and punt return ace. Throughout his career, Sherels has just one interception, but three punt return touchdowns. On 148 career punt returns, Sherels has averaged over 10 yards per return. While he doesn’t do it as much, Sherels has returned 38 kicks in his career for an average of 26 yardsa return. With the Jets having released receiver Jeremy Kerley on Wednesday, the team is suddenly in need of a punt returner. Jets coach Todd Bowles prefers his returners to have dual value at another position, which means Sherels fits the bill. > http://jetswire.usatoday.com/2016/03/09/vikings-marcus-sherels-to-visit-jets-on-thursday-per-reports/
Beerfish
This is about the 1st time in many years that a Jets front office seems to analyze and recognize the organizational weaknesses and pro actively try to fix them. Kick returner, olbs etc.
JoJoTownsell1
Whether they sign him or not is not the story, the story is that we are finally addressing a serious problem and not acting like special teams doesn't matter. Our return game/punt game last year was a disaster and is part of the reason we missed the playoffs.
