PERSONNEL ANALYSIS: By trading DE John Abraham to the Falcons, the Jets are left without any speed rushers. On the surface, it made no sense to deal a premier pass rusher who is 27. First-year coach Eric Mangini apparently believes the defense can function without any so-called stars, that it can thrive with a bunch of smart, versatile overachievers. The former New England assistant is trying to instill the Patriot way in the Jets. Make no mistake, those players are critical, but you also need playmakers--and Abraham was the Jets' top playmaker in the front seven. They unloaded him because of concerns about his durability and character. Now they'll have to find an Abraham-like player to replace Abraham. . . .

WR/PR Tim Dwight was a solid, inexpensive pick-up. At last, they filled the need for a punt returner, a major problem last season. Dwight no longer is a breakaway threat--his longest return last season was 23 yards--but he's smart and sure-handed. As a wideout, he will compete for the No. 4 job. Actually, the Jets are so thin at receiver that he could push Jerricho Cotchery for the No. 3 position. Maybe Dwight can be their new Wayne Chrebet. When healthy, he's a fairly efficient receiver, with a career average of 16.0 yards per catch. He's familiar with the Jets' new offense, having played under coordinator Brian Schottenheimer in San Diego. . . .

The Jets will be a multiple-front defense. When they use a 3-4, which should be often, Dewayne Robertson gets the nose tackle job by default. He will get double-teamed on the nose, hampering his ability to shoot gaps and make plays. He's ideal as a 3-technique tackle in a 4-3, the position the Jets drafted him to play. He'll probably get to play some of that, but Mangini seems intent on making a gradual transition to a 3-4. Trouble is, they have no natural nose tackles on the roster. Enter Robertson, who has the size (6-1, 317) and strength to play the position.

HARD TRUTH: By adding up a first-round pick (29th overall) in the trade for Abraham, the Jets have the flexibility to trade up from the fourth spot to select their quarterback of the future. The Kiddie Corps, first-year G.M. Mike Tannenbaum and Mangini, would be crazy to pass up that opportunity. Every successful franchise needs stability at the quarterback position, and the Jets don't have any long-term promise. Chad Pennington is trying to recover from his second surgery on his throwing shoulder and Patrick Ramsey has only one year left on his contract. Trade up, draft a quarterback, start fresh. It's a no-brainer.

You know, for every negative comment on the trading of John Abe, you'll find a positive one. Same thing with them pointing out that we need to trade up and grab a QB...how many times have we read it would be dumb for the Jets to do that?

Jets should just stay the course and stock pile picks...too many holes to fill...how many times have we heard that?
