NEW YORK -- Still searching for a starter who might pitch some of the innings left uncovered by Tom Glavine's departure, the Mets have armed their bullpen with a veteran right-handed pitcher who is expected to cover relief innings for a bullpen that was overworked by late last summer. On Tuesday, the Mets signed free agent Matt Wise to a one-year contract.

Wise, who turned 32 last month, comes to the Mets after four seasons with the Brewers, the last three exclusively as a reliever. Although he is not the same kind of pitcher as Guillermo Mota, Wise is likely to work the kind of the innings Mota struggled to cover last summer -- post-starter, pre-setup man.

"Matt has had success in a variety of roles," general manager Omar Minaya said in a prepared statement. "He adds a versatile arm to the bullpen."

Wise pitched two or more innings six times last season. Manager Willie Randolph had hoped to bring in a versatile reliever after some of the Mets relievers became unnerved by how they were used last summer.

"I'm ecstatic to join the Mets," Wise said in the same Mets statement. "I look forward to helping out in whatever role Willie Randolph wants."

Wise, who began his career with the Angels in 2000, produced a 3-2 record, one save and a 4.19 ERA in a career-high 56 games with the Brewers last season, pitching 53 2/3 innings. He allowed 61 hits and 17 walks and struck out 43 batters. Wise has a 3.27 ERA in 33 innings against National League East teams in the last three seasons. Wise has a 17-21 career record and 4.18 ERA in 201 games.

mediocre relief pitcher for a mediocre team.

He's not a long relief guy- cant pitch more than one inning...

was DFA'd by the brewers... and we're there to scoop him up.

struggled mightily in the 2nd half.

So did we. See we have that in common with him. That's what peaked Omars interest in the 1st place. :bag:
