We're talking about average every day users here. With the 1.83G UI could easily have 50 windows of porn open while downloading 10 albums off Itunes and Playing a game of Warcraft online. So what, the 2.5 lets you have 200 windows open while doing the same, is it really worth $1700 more to the average user? I doubt it.

further proof you are absolutely totally clueless about computers. You can argue that for a regular user that a centrino chip is adequate, but you can not price compare a low end hp laptop with a centrino to the macbook pro which is apple's highest performing flagship model because you are comparing apples to lemons. If you want to compare low end models, take a look at the regular macbook vs a machine of the same specs.

Also, here is a hint to help you with your mac bashing, it is pretty much widely accepted that apple is EXTREMELY competitive in the laptop market( just look at the price comparisons on computerworld), so trying to compare laptops to make your point just won't work.

Hey dude, don't take any offense, if the world wasn't full of technically and electronically inept people than places like Best Buy wouldn't really be in business;). Besides, I only wish I could play the guitar, lol.

^^^^ yeah! That!

(Hint, if you want to bash Apple, head to the Mac Pros!... shh.. keep it a secret).

OMG!!! I just put together a $27,000 MAC!!! The Apple Fan Boys are clueless, BOOZER was right!

Here is a totally comparable SWEET Dell for under a $1,000! Macs are hundreds of times more expensive! PROOF!

I could control the international space station with that thing, or edit some serious hd porn, lol.

I am patiently waiting for the next big revision for the mac pros so I can upgrade my quadG5.

BTW, the mac pros are a pretty good deal too for what they are, go load up a top of the line dell with 2 quad core xeons that the mac pro uses and see how it goes for ya.

The simple truth is this, apple will not sell a cheap-o bare bones pc, this is why tons of people with machines 3-5 years old have absolutely no problem loading apple's newest os's. At the end of the day, apple can not sell a box that does not support its os well, because it is responsible for everything. Dell is more than happy to sell you the cheapest s##t-box they can spec out, then laugh and blame windoze when people call support and complain that their machine is crippled under vista. So yeah i can get a cheaper dell than an apple, but you can't really get a dell or any other reputable manufactured pc for meaningfully less than a comparable apple. It is kinda like a car, yeah the 11,000 smart car will get me to work in about the same amount of time as an 80,000 mercedes, but that doesn't mean the mercedes is overpriced and should be no more than 11,000.

If I were you, I would wait till they release Snow Leopard (10.6) which is going to be built around a parallel processing model that only new computer can take advantage of. I am sure they will release a beast along with it and just blow the doors off with performance.

So if I need a secondary unit just for email and the web and I am not worried about apps I am assuming that PC is the way to go right? Please advise. Thanks.

sure, just make sure that the hard drive is big enough for all the virus, spyware, and anti virus software the machine will be full of, lol, and make sure you have enough ram that the machine won't bog down from said spyware, virus, and anti virus software which will constantly be running in the background, hahahahahaha

The main PC I use has 512 megs of RAM, no spy software and no anti-virus. I do have to reboot it once every 4 months but other than that I never have any issues. Oh and it is a Dell that I spent $400 about 3 years ago.

Seems like a pretty good investment if you ask me.

Sure. But nobody "just uses email and web" and that is why I love helping people buy a Mac.

My MIL (Mother in Law) came to me about a computer a few years ago and "just wanted to do email and surfing" but we got her a Mac because of all it could do in the future. Today, she using iPhoto with her digital camera, is hooked up to .Mac, burns DVDs for people and downloads songs from iTunes.

If you get a cheapo PC, the minute you want to try and do something else, you are going to be stuck. The minute someone gives you an iPod or a digital camera or video camera. You won't be able to edit those files, upload them or watch movies on DVD.

At that point the crippled PC with a crippled and buggy OS that doesn't come with the full suite of applications to do a wide variety of stuff well become just waste of money.

I agree, I bought an emachines 3 or 4 years ago, it has 512 megs of ram, which i may upgrade in the near future, but other than that, it works just like if it was new. No spyware, no anti-virus, nothing. i have never had a problem. i am not an idiot and know what to open, what to download, etc. i guess thats why people need to waste mega bucks on macs? i dunno.

on top of that i utilize power hungry programs like autocad and arcgis. no problems.

I have a hard time believing that an emachine with only 512ram, possibly shared, runs like new. 512 is like the minimum to run Xp with very little programs installed. You are running autocad and theres no performance hit on only 512? I don't believe it.

well, the memory isn't shared for one thing. i have 512 unshared, and i have many many programs installed :) i just don't run them all at the same exact time, but that is fine with me. i do however clean my machine regularly and take good care of it. im not an idiot and don't put stupid unneeded crap on my computer.

maybe you have just been using that mac too long.

to be honest though, i have a dell at work with 2 gigs of ram, but they have ten times the amount of software on their machines as we really need, all kinds of security crap, and it bogs down like hell. honestly runs much smoother on my home machine with 1/4 the ram.

i have had the internet since early 94, i have NEVER had any problems. guess you just gotta be smart?

Or lucky.

Or your computer is one of the thousands out there that is connected to the internet, running windows has been hacked and is being used a drone to send out spam and do DOS attacks without you knowing.

Lately, spammers have started to get more aggressive. For example, it is thought that recent viruses like SoBig.F were sent out specifically to recruit "zombie machines" for spammers. The zombie machines are generally personal computers owned by unsuspecting private citizens who happened to contract the SoBig virus. The virus opens their machine up to spammers, who can then route spam e-mails through their machines. Since the IP addresses of these machines are new, they do not appear in the IP address blacklists and millions of spam e-mails can route through them before they get blacklisted. The zombie machines have also been uses for denial of service attacks on places like Spamhaus.org.

luck has nothing to do with it. stupidity maybe.

like i said, im not stupid. i know what programs should and shouldn't be running on my machine. anything else? i understand macs are better for those who are technologcally inept and can't do these things on their own, but what about me? why should i buy a mac? i cannot find a reason.

Then don't, I was a long time Windows user but I got sick of it. I'm a computer 'geek' I've built many machines. Although I do pirate a lot and still use my Window box from time to time, I just like the ease of OS X and the fact it doesn't have a registry to bog stuff down. Also their software packages are great and cheaper than most Windows packages (especially office). What really won me over was the fact that I can run Windows on my Mac now. Although I do agree with the fact that they can be overpriced, but alot of times you get what you pay for. Also whats great about OS X is that you can do alot of things just out of the box, like BwanaZulia mentioned in another post. Their motto is "it just works" and so far I can vouch for that, I haven't had any problems what so ever. If you are happy with Windows and your setup thats fine, more power to ya. Only complaint I have, is that my MBP gets really hot small price to pay IMO.

i just don't see how anyone could possibly think that it would be worth the price which is FAR FAR higher. i guess if you feel like wasting money away, you would be right, i am just far thriftier and can't imagine spending double to triple for something that would do nothing more for me. i don't really have anything against macs, but you are right, you get what you pay for, a very overpriced machine.

*Some* of them are overpriced, but If you take a high end Dell, Hp or Sony it equals out. In most cases the Mac will win out as far as features go and OS. Have you ever used Mac? if not, don't knock until you try it.

I think they are all overpriced. I would argue that many times dell, hp and sony are all as well. i would NEVER buy an hp or a dell either.

As for using macs, i have used them many times, they are fine, just not worth the cost AT ALL. like i said, they are probably good for people who are technologically inept and want to throw some money around.

Why? Are mac users so stupid that they can't figure out how to plug their camera to the USB port with the cable their camera came with? Are they so dumb to not understand the pop up that asks if they would like to burn the pics to DVD/CD, open the folder, view them in a slideshow, or save them on their computer? Seriously? Do Macs actually read the minds of old stupid peop,le to know they want to burn a DVD, or do they need to actually click the same friggin programs that PC users do? Your argument is baseless. Completely. Macs are more expensive, PC's do the same thing. You want to paint this ridiculously stupid idea that PC's are immediately going to be bombarded with spyware and viruses. It's a load of crap. I use AVG free virus protection. Have never had a virus. I even went about 2 years with no virus protection before I found AVG and STILL never got a virus. Mac users are ironically just like George Bush, using viruses are WMD's to scare people to pay more for the same thing.

Good response, dude. Way to totally back up your claims that PC's are all riddled with virus, crippled by spy/adware, aren't able to edit video/audio/photos, upload them, or watch movies on DVD. Which, by the way, are totally baseless claims. And then you respond to someone else by calling them delusional. How ironic.

This is the same guy who uses the fact that you can hook a camera up to a Mac and that's why it's better. They're the same friggin thing, and no matter how you slice it Macs are more money. Alot more. The average user is buying it simply because they think it's cool and hip to do so. It's fine though. People go to the Gap and pay more for clothes simply because they want to wear the cool clothes. It goes on in all industries. Mac and Mac users just feel a great need to bash the competition with baseless nonsense and scare tactics so they don't have to admit they just bought the thing to be cool.

Never said they couldn't do it. I said it was easier to do on a Mac. My claim to that, is having been a computer user (Windows/Mac) for the last 20 years.

If you care to go back and read, I was saying that the cheapo PCs don't come with enough ram, power, hardware or software to do that as well as a Mac.

yes they do, you just don't know how to use them, and instead of learning would rather waste mucho dinero to make it as easy for them as it would be for a 90 year old whose technological prowess goes about as far as a solar powered calculator.

Mac computers on the other hand, I have never owned one but used frieds of mine plenty of times to know they are not nearly worth2-3 times the cost of a PC with more memory and ram.

So, who is starting Mac bashing? Mirror time for you.

Wait, so you're comparing a modern Mac to a cheapo PC? That sure as hell is a fair comparison. Not to mention a "cheapo PC" CAN do all those things, just as well as a modern Mac. I have a 256 Megabyte RAM, shared, with a Thunderbird processor, 40GB Hard Drive, and a DVD player. I can do EVERYTHING you claim my "cheapo PC" wouldn't be able to do. And as soon as I plug in the device, my computer auto-runs it. How easier could it possibly get?
