Preakness and Belmont Stakes winner Afleet Alex suffered a leg injury and will miss the Aug. 7 Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park.

The nation's leading 3-year-old worked at Belmont Park on Tuesday and trainer Tim Ritchey noticed a problem in the colt's ankle. Afleet Alex was taken to the New Jersey Equine Clinic in Clarksburg where veterinarians discovered a hairline fracture of the left cannon bone. He was operated on by Dr. Patricia Hogan, who put a screw across the fracture.

Afleet Alex is expected to return to racing.

Monmouth Park would have gotten a really big crowd-

Well that's a bummer. I was a huge fan of his from the beginning. Was gonna regret not seeing him at Monmouth while watching the nags at Toga instead. Hope he comes back healthy. Good thing that his owners want to see him race and not send him right off to stud.
